About x-drill/slotted rotors

I have heard people say that x-drilled and slotted rotor tend to crack some times, is this under normal driving (you know the once in a while street race) or SCCA or just hella stupid driving. Could installation cause that as well???

read my posts on this thread...

how are powerstop cross/slotted rotors?

and yes, xdrilled rotors will crack if they get hot enough... just dont brake too hard if you dont want them to crack :P xdrilled/slotted rotors are mostly just for show anyway... but read that thread, i explain myself more clearly.

here's a pic of a cracked powerslot rotor:

and here's a pic of a cracked porsche rotor:

hope i helped...

I see the pic but i still dont think that the crack just because. I've read somewhere that the reason why they crack is not because they are crappy but because they are intended for high speed braking. Not for daily driving. I guess because they start rusting after a while water and moisture may expand the rotor causing it to crack. Also when you break and then lets say hit a puddle of watter what happens it sprays your rotors so now hey go from HOT to cold ...that is most likely the chance of them cracking.

Dont think that just because they are x drilled or slotted they will crack. Any rotor stock or after market can crack. My friends OEM rotors have soo many cracks in them its amazing how that thing still didnt fall apart.

Slotting or cross drilling introduces additional stress risers into the rotor surface. More stress risers increase the chance of cracking.

That doesn't mean that cross drilled or slotted rotors will crack, it means that they are more prone to cracking.

Heating and cooling is the cause of the cracking, so track use does cause the rotors to crack quicker as will splashing water on a hot rotor (i.e. using the brakes on the street without dust shields).
