My 'lude failed the etest miserably, any suggestions as to what I could do to make it pass? The readings were as follows: HC: 141 (limit: 60), CO%: 0.76 (limit: 0.33), NO:2730 (limit: 450). Any idea what is causing the extremely high NOx? I heard that playing with the timing can help, but should I advance it or retard it, and would that involve turning it clockwise or counterclockwise? I've read through a bunch of threads, but I'm looking for advice specific for my readings (just so I don't sound terribly redundant.) Any help would be great!

The timing on your 5th gen lude is controlled by the ECU and I believe is not adjustable by simply turning the distributer.I presume the check engine light is not on so I guess the engine ecu is not reporting any problems. I would give the car a complete tune up including a valve adjustment and a cleaning of the egr passages. Also if that does not work, you may have to put the engine back to its stock configuration because I belive when those E test are performed the ecu is operating in a closed loop mode and may not be able to preform correctly form an emissions point of view with foreign devices installed. Hopefully that will do the job.

Reason: Check for mods
Sorry still trying to figure out how exactly to use this forum As to your question, I really don't know what cat is on it. I just bought the car and I'm still trying to get her registered. I will definitely check that out in the morning. I know it has aftermarket exhaust but sadly don't know exactly what it is.

I heard methyl hydrate could help alot(the guy at the etest centre even told me that). Any thoughts?

Fortunately I don't live in a state that requires E test so I can't answer that question.Hopefully these inspections don't cost you a lot of money so you can try different ideas like that additive.
that depends on what you consider alot of money...about 40 bucks a pop unless you have receipts from new parts you've replaced each time, then its 20 bucks. Still enough when you're next to broke, especially when the only receipt you could provide is for an additive that helps you cheat...
Oh, I forgot to mention, it passed EVERYTHING at idle, and failed everything on acceleration...don't know if that is significant...
Hmmm it is most likely the exhaust. Check if it even has a cat and that will probably need to be replaced. But do not touch anything in the engine that is not the cause of the problem valves maybe but damn that's expensive or time consuming.
