97 SH Swaptions...

Hey guys, i just picked up a 97 typeSH for $500, needs a new engine. The tranny is fine and i dont want to break the bank buying a new tranny, though i've heard i can keep it with a base h22a4 if i drop the atts, not too sure about details. Basically, what are my Swap-options for engine replacement? What engines (usdm or jdm) would be easiest, best, or what will work with the h22a4 typeSH tranny (m2u4 transmission)
Thanks in advance

The easiest swap for you would be a Japanese "Type-S" model engine. Or the USDM SH motor. They will bolt right up and be no issue. However, they don't come cheap, especially the Type-S motors, which usually sell for around $3k at most importing places.

I don't think the base block will work correctly with your trans even if you remove the ATTS. There are different axles used, for one thing. Then there is an actual bracket that is mounted on the block on Base model engine blocks, but is not needed on SH blocks because the ATTS serves as that bracket.

So, you'd have to add that bracket.

I think I got that right, can somebody correct me?

you are right pierce. actually he would only need the drivers side axle. the passenger side would still work. but there are ppl on this board who have successfully used base blocks with sh trannies. involves fabricating an adaptor plate out of 1/4" steel to make some holes for bolts to hold it all together. however im not sure what would need to be done with the ecu. just by an sh block and save yourself some huge headaches.

Thanks for the answers, thats what i was hearing from the guy i bought it from ($500, immaculate condition, excelent service records, clean carfax, 230k miles, new tires, tranny rebuilt 20k miles ago) Just needs an engine, dont really feel like swapping trannies b/c this one is 20k miles into a rebuild, so pretty good. Trying to find an h22a4 sh block but its a pain in the neck! if anyone has one let me know!

How much are you looking to spend??? I have (2) SH H22a4s one from my 70K mile red car that i wrecked. Ran like perfection, car only driven sometimes and in the summer thing is mint. But would be more expensive. I also have the 120K mile engine in the SH i replaced my wrecked red one with. Its runs great but smokes blue smoke, but would be significantly less than id charge for the 70K one and would get you back on the road for cheap. It prolly has another 80K ( albeit smokey) miles left in it and had the timing belt, water pump etc. service done on it right before i bought the car (have the paperwork from dealership).
Either would save you from having to get a $3500 Type-S engine and would bolt right on to your tranny and into your car with no worries. Just lemme know.

Also the 70K engine is out of a 97' (like yours) the 120K engine is out of a 2000. There are subtle differences between 97' engines and all the other years. Nothing that can't be worked around if you choose the 2000 thou.
