Hey guys, just bought my first prelude, the guy i bought it from was kinda a butcher. anyway, there's a whining noise coming from the drivers side, that gets louder with RPM, i don't think it is the power steering cuz its got lots of fluid, maybe the alternator, i was thinking also the crank pulley, or even a tensioner... any ideas?
No. The only thing you should be spraying on a belt is belt conditioner. oil will make it slip and also make it wear faster.
if it's squealing try tightening the tension on your alternator and power steering belts but make sure they are within spec so as not to over-tighten.
i believe also that there is a bearing inside the p/s pump that whines when it goes bad so that may be the culprit as well. but first start with the belt tension.

You should look into purchasing or downloading the Honda Factory Service Manual. It will save you a lot of headache in the future. I have only done this on my 4th gen so yours will be slightly different. It shouldn't be difficult to figure out though.
From diagrams i quickly pulled up for reference it looks like there is an adjusting bolt on top of the power steering pump.
The alternator looks the same, however. There is a nut beneath the alternator (pointing toward the driver side fender) that you need to loosen only. (Not remove). Then there is a 10mm bolt under/in front of the alternator. There will be two bolts right next to each other. Only tighten the right bolt. This will tighten the belt. Don't forget to re-tighten the nut that was previously loosened.

so i d/l'ed a manual, and you're right, it will make life easier. i will check and see if that works when i return from my posting.
also, my check engine light comes on either after ive been driving for a little while, or when bring the RPMs up past around 4, then stays on for the remainder of the ride, but it will be off again when i shut of and start my car again
well the car sat for a month or so, and the whining noise is now gone, idk if thats a good thing or bad. also, a little off topic, but is it just me or is it next to impossible to find a short shifter for a 5th gen
Honda OEM parts only, especially the ones you're looking for, also replace all 5 seals behind the timing belt.
The whine can be many things, can even be the power steering, if it has even a leak that is too small to notice it will whine from pulling air into the system. Outer belts and balance shaft belts would be the next thing to check for the whine.
Side note:
Belt conditioner is for poor people who can't afford a $10 belt or someone who is a total hack at fixing cars, just get a belt if it squeals. If the outer belts squeal then the timing belt probably isn't in any better condition.

I just bought a 2000 Prelude and it's doing the same thing...my buddies tease about it sounding like some monster blower.
I've stuck my head down there...as close as I'm comfortable with...and it seems to be coming from the alternator. I picked up a used one for $40 so I'm gonna swap it out and hope it goes away.
Previous owner said he did not change the tensioner when he had the timing belt replaced...why anyone would do that is beyond me. The car has 188k miles on it, with the t belt last changed right about on schedule at 106k. Other than the whine/whistle it runs like a clock.
When I bought my current lude the previous owner just replaced the timing belt and it made that whining sound for a few thousand miles and went away after a while.
Dunno what exactly caused it but i'd just deal with the noise for now.

Don't just buy parts when you don't even know whats wrong, stupid and a waste of money. Either the outer belts or the balance shaft belt is too tight since they are the only 3 that are manually adjustable. You also DO NOT have to replace the tensioner every time a timing belt is changed on a H22, only if it is leaking oil from the tensioner.

like i said, it sounds like its coming from the alternator, you make it sound like I just blindly bought one without even opening the hood. It isn't my first rodeo, though it is one of the first cars I've had to work on that has the belt end of the engine crammed against the inner fender (aka FWD).
I felt plenty certain enough about it to spend $40 right up until I started stumbling into threads like this one today and started second guessing myself, hoping what sounds like the alternator isn't the sound of a tensioner "throwing it's voice".
installed my jtc ss couple weeks ago it comes with everything needed for the install if you have any questions feel free to ask....its a very simple procedure. never put oil on your belts!!!....ive used bar soap in a jam but always have a can of belt conditioner in the trunk.....
