I know that we've beaten this to death... but recent experience has me needing to post this:
If you have 5th Gen and you are using up oil between changes, you REALLY need to check out your CAM SEAL.
Believe it or not I don't seem to be using any oil anymore after replacing the CAM SEAL.
Oddly, it's VERY difficult to know just how much oil you are loosing because it leaks down the back side of the engine under the intake manifold.
As such, there does not appear to be much oil on your engine (unless you have the car raised and you are looking from the oil filter to the right of the intake manifold). [Even then the scope of the leak is really hard to determine.]

Look on the passenger side of the engine. as you're looking at the side, what you're looking for is oil residue towards the rear of the engine. The seal itself is fairly well hidden, but if there's oil all over the place in that general area, its a safe bet that's your problem. I'm sure someone can take a picture of the location, its fairly hard to describe without pointing.
I just replaced mine last weekend. Mine didn't appear to be too bad off, and there's no appreciable difference yet, but it's only been about a hundred miles, so we'll see.
I have been noticing some fresh oil coming from somewhere else, though . . . . Just to the left of the oil drain (timing belt side of the engine). It's not a lot, but it wasn't a particularly welcome discovery.
Unfortunately, the ATTS unit makes it impossible to see up in there to get an idea of what the problem is.

i burn the same amount (about 1/2 quart per 3500 miles) after putting in the AEBS cam seal. i really think a lot of that oil just ends up on the back bumper due to the oil squirters.

i have a feeling i'm having this problem too. I found a very slight dripping of oil.. but can't see where the hell it's coming from.. the leak is coming from above the atts unit, but I can't see past it. Anyone have any suggestions on how I can verify this? (I can't see **** past the atts.. damn u type-SH!)

what is a good amount of oil to go through between changes? it seems to me last time i went about 6,000 miles on mobil 1... somewhere inbetween i poured in another court or so. when i changed the oil after the 6000 miles, i extracted a little more than three quarts (and i was getting oil pressure loss light on sharp 180 degree plus onway ramps).
i have never noticed an oil spot under my car, but maybe i am an oblivious ****

1/2 a quart is still better than what I burn.
Of course there can be other culprits like the valve cover gasket itself not sealing 100%. Interesting thought on the oil squirters.
Yeah I used to burn oil, wasnt anything substantial though so i wasnt really woried about. I looke under the car never was able to see any residue or any oil spots anywhere. But the dealership did say i have to replace the cam cause it was leaking so I did. Did not look if it was making and diff guess I should.

My car when it was brand new use to burn a quart of oil every 1000 miles. The dealership would just give me the run around eventually when my car hit 18,000 miles it stopped. Weird Huh!
