5th Gen, Loose Shifter no 1st or reverse

Hey Lude Enthusiasts!

I need your guys' help on something. The other day i was driving and felt my shifter loosen up, the next day i drove it a little further and it was totally loose, and i couldn't get it back into first or reverse. My shifter has always been perfect so i was just wondering what you guys think it might be. All my other gears work fine and the car shifts fine just won't go into 1st or reverse. Thanks

Assuming this is a manual.

Bad synchros, bad shift linkage?

Could you provide more information?

You might want to flush your tranny fluid. My homie just experience something like this, when he flush is tranny fluid it's back to normal. Let us know what happens!

Check your fluids and try tranny flushing first. If that doesn't fix the problem your tranny most likely is shot meaning need get new one!

My first inclination would be bad shifter cable but the reverse thing is throwing me. Typically when the shifter cable goes you'll try and get it into 1st, 3rd, or 5th and have issues with some or all those gears. When mine went it was 3rd that was mostly the problem child and it felt like a "mushy" shift. I'd open the hood and check where the cables connect to the tranny see how everything looks and check the cables there. I'd also grab a hold of both knuckles and manually move them to see how they feel (I found this easier with the cable dis-attached). If you don't get a nice clunk kinda movement/sound then you know it's an issue inside the tranny. After that I'd pull the center console and check everything there. Check all the connections make sure everything matches the Helms manual. Lastly I'd get the car up on jack stands, pull the heat shield and check the cables there, check where they attach to the frame and make sure that its tight. That's about the best advice I can give on that, hope you solve the issue!
