5th gen engines?

I'm looking at buying a 5th gen prelude. I've been looking online, and at least half have had engine swaps. I'm just wondering if these engines are notorious for having problems or if anyone knows why everyone swaps them.
Thanks

these engines will last 200k+ miles if you take care of them. my guess as to why many have been replaced is because
1. they want a stronger engine to go faster
2. they blew up their original engine trying to go fast
3. i dont know why

Our engines have a few notorious issues that may in certain cases eventually lead to a failure of some sort.

Auto-tensioner fails(therefore causing a loose or broken T-belt and bent valves).

They also have a tendency to burn oil, and when owners are negligent of this...the engines may suffer damage from oil starvation of some sort.

The H22 is a really strong and reliable engine if treated properly. But many people don't treat them properly...(as said above).

Dontbuy really summed it up pretty well. I just modified.

The h22a4 engine is a very good engine that has for example carbon fiber reinforced cylinder walls and a oil cooler that act to enhance the longevity of it.Unfortunately some engines are abused and then people come on line and call them oil burners and trash them .One way that can assess the engines health is by doing the following to check to see how much oil its burning.

1:Have the seller fully warm the engine up .
2: Then get out of the car and have the seller rev the engine hard a few times .
3: If each time the engine is reved hard only a little bit of smoke comes out I would guess it may be a good engine.
4: If the smoke comes out constant and smells oily then walk away from that deal.

My 1999 engine has 140k miles on it and burns not much more oil then when it was new. If you can find a engine with a clean exhaust like the one shown below on my car it would be sweet.

If the oil consumption is high , beside indicating a poor engine you will end up probably end up having to periodically having to pay someone to clean the egr ports from time to time .After purchase , irregardless of what the owner said, all internal and external belts should be replaced and any advise on other possible warn parts from the tech should be considered for replacement.

Here is some preventive maintenance recently done on my car. After removing all the parts to get to the timing belt, apparently their are some parts that are relatively easy to replace while that part to the engine is torn down .By replacing those parts ,the Honda tech was looking out for me.

Beware of SH DRIVER!!! He is better known as Robert Taylor from preludepower.com and preludeaustralia.com

He was banned for created threads and posts that start arguments. This forum needs to get rid of him now to prevent issues with other members later.

He was given many chances to shape up but chose not to. He has come here now to start more drama. Do not respond to his threads at all because that is what he his looking for. If he gets no attention he will go away but if you feed the fire he will continue.

This post might seem like I'm giving him attention but I am simply spreading awareness.

Here is the thread where he posted the same video as above.

here are more threads where he has started drama. Most of his threads get locked because of all the BS.

If you're looking to get a prelude I'd say the main thing to check is the oil when you go to buy the car. Check to see how dirty it is or how low it is, and if either are true that's a reason to walk away. Another thing to do is ask about the h22's oil consumption and see if they know what you mean, if not, walk away. Yes the h22 does "burn" oil, and people say they "cannot be run as hard as a b-series," but the whole thing is, they aren't an idiots car. You have to actually take care of your vehicle and do maintenance and if you aren't willing to, well you shouldn't really be looking at a prelude in the first place. But I am at 130k and the last owner was a pos when it came to taking care of this care, but I've never had a single problem with it.

h series engines are great.. but like everyone said they are only that way if you take care of them and maintain the upkeep they have... ive got 186K on mine right now and its original.. the only reason why they may have a swap (and some of theses have been listed) they blew their engine, they switched it to obd 1 so its easier to program.. the H22 is a JDM motor that comes at 200 hp as the H22A USDM comes at 190 hp... etc etc etc

Any motor is good as long as you take care of it. If you plan on hittin vtec everytime you take off..expect oil to burn and your gas mileage to suck, also expect to have issues later on. If your just going to drive normally and every now and then get on it then you shouldnt have any issues, unless there is something already wrong with the motor from the previous owner.
