5th gear synchro?

i know 5th gens have very weak 5th gear synchros, and now mine, as well as many of yours i assume grinds even on easy shifts from 4th. my question is, do you think there is any way we could start a petition to have honda fix this problem despite the fact that many of our cars are out of warranty? i'd be glad to head the petition as long as i can get lots of support from members on the boards. if you're interested, just drop me a line here with some info. ie. year of lude, mileage, when synchro began to grind, etc.

thanks,
andrew beaven

My 5th Gear started grinding less than 5,000 miles since purchase. It was brand new!!

Fixed under warranty though!

Mine started grinding at 28000 miles... I think it happened because I downshifted wrong....

Right here. mine started at 63,000.
Has anybody asked how much it would cost to get it fixed?

my 5th gear also grinds when i'm at high speeds and usually if i'm shifting from 4th to 5th when over 3,000 RPMs (quite ridiculous)...also when i'm at full throttle.....i solve this by double-clutching and sometimes just letting the RPMs drop before shifting..this doesn't even always work...i'd be glad to petition w/ you as long as we can get enough people....speak up people!!!!

keep the responces coming guys, it'll take more than the six of us, but i know that honda has a very very good history of fantastic customer service. If we get enough people involved i honestly think they may fix the problem free of charge.

checkmate58, i really don't think your 5th gear synchro grind would be related to a wrong downshift. that would probably affect the synchro of the gear that you downshifted into incorrectly.

If we can add the first/reverse problems as well, I'm in. I have 7700 miles and have trouble getting into first and/or reverse a lot of the time. . .

You know..that's what I told myself too.. but the grinding didn't start until that messed up downshift I did..oh well.. it was covered under warranty and they fixed it for free.

Problem started after 3rd gear synchro locked me out of the gear while getting on the freeway accelerating fast. I pushed it 2 or three times while reclutching and speed matching until it went in. I was kinda a sitting duck while trying to merge so I was frantic to have it go in. After that fifth and reverse had trouble. Third to fifth gear shifts grinded (testing only) and reverse would get impossible to go in many times. Frustrating. This was after 10K miles. I got it fixed finally after reverse was permanantly broken. They replace my fifth gear, reverse synchro, a sleeve and reverse shift fork under the extended warranty no questions asked.

Do a search and link all the threads that discuss this to this thread. There are tons:

I got it fixed under warranty but the problem came back. The service advisor said it would have cost well over 2g's to replace the 5th gear syncro.

Yeah right here. I bought my 97 less than a year ago. A month after I bought it, I noticed I had a 3rd and 5th synchro going out. The warranty company screwed me over and refused to pay for it.
