3rd-5th just got hard to engage, with some grinding

Last Wednesday it was real hot and car started getting hard to shift about half way home. 2001 SH with 65k, no leaks, never abused, but was always kind of notchy from the beginning.

Slave cylinder area has been squeaking for a bit recently, but it was just the metal on metal contact with the fork. Lubed that up and no more sqeak.

I changed the fluid with Honda MTF, and have driven it twice since. It seems to be getting worse, and definitely gets worse the more it gets warmed up. 3 and 5 are very to tough to get into after about 10 minutes or so, and initially only 5th was grinding occasionally, but now 3 has crunched a few times.

Fluid change looked relatively clean, and the magnetic drain plug had a tiny bit of debris on it.

Diagnosis Dr. House?

How long was it before you last changed it and what was in it before?

If parts inside are f'ed then a fluid change isn't gonna make it better.

Probably the synchro-sleeve is not mating with the synchro properly because it is damaged

Great time to invest in a trans rebuild...I have just the guide to help you!

Ok, it has been parked all winter so I'm just getting back to this.

Fluid was changed first time in 2004 when I got the car new with less than a 100 miles on it. So it sat unused for a few years. Then I did it again with about 20k back in 2007.

I did drive it a few more times after the new fluid was in and it still does some random grinding here and there. First has always been a lil tougher to get into, but now some the others are similar to first. Sometimes have to try another gear, then go to original, or engage/disengage clutch and try again.

When I changed the fluid in July it looked pretty clean, a small layer of film on it, no big chunks, etc. If the synchros were going wouldn't there be a good amount of debris on the bolt?

Definitely gets worse once it gets warmed up.

Any other troubleshooting steps I can do other than pulling tranny?
