30k mile service...

My car is a 2001 with 28000 miles on it. My 30000 mile service is coming up and the way I drive, will be around in about two months. Here is what it entails:

- Oil change
- Replace plugs
- Inspect Distributor cap, rotor, ignition wires
- Install fuel conditioner
- Tire rotation/balance
- Adjust rear/parking brakes. Clean and lube front calipers.
Inspect rotors/drums.
- Inspect/adjust drive belts.
- Install transmission conditioner
- Replace brake fluid
- Alignment check
- Cooling system service
- Install coolant conditioner
- Lube door locks
- Vehicle maintenance inspection

All of the above (plus some other stupid stuff not mentioned) costs $360 before tax. Extras include:

A transmission flush for $60.
A coolant flush for $50.

Now, my ? is, out of all of the above, which will I really need to get? I mean, if all is done, your talking over $500 after taxes and everything. Any opinions?

Re: 30k mile service...

If you don't want (or are not able) to do the work yourself, here's what I suggest:

- Oil change
yes

- Replace plugs
If you're using platinums (like the stock 5Gen plugs), you don't need to do this. A full set of platinum stock plugs will run you $50 or over. If you're going with copper plugs, replace them every 15k miles or so. Platinums are supposed to last until 100k or something like that.

- Inspect Distributor cap, rotor, ignition wires
Don't bother inspecting the ignition wires. You can do that yourself. Don't inspect the cap or rotor, replace them.

- Install fuel conditioner
Fuel what?? Forget it. If you want to try a fuel additive, try Regane. Don't pay Honda $30 to put a $5 fuel additive in your car.

- Tire rotation/balance
This should be done every other oil change any way. If it's time, do it.

- Adjust rear/parking brakes. Clean and lube front calipers.
Lube front calipers? There's no need unless they are doing a full brake job. They should lube them when the pads are changed. I doubt you need this at 30k miles. The parking brake also shouldn't need to be adjusted.

Inspect rotors/drums.
Uh, you can do that yourself by just looking at them. Don't pay them $20 to do this.

- Inspect/adjust drive belts.
This shouldn't be needed at 30k, but it is probably a good idea. Don't pay them more than $10 for it, though. All they are going to do is shine a flash light down there and take a look. Less than 5 minutes work.

- Install transmission conditioner
Transmission what?? Forget it. Just do a transmission fluid change.

- Replace brake fluid
Make sure they flush and bleed the system. Honda bends you over on these, especially with ABS brakes (which by the way doesn't require anything special on the 5Gen, so why do they charge more??). My local dealer charges $129 for a ABS flush, but only $70 for a regular brake flush.

- Alignment check
Check? The only way they can check it reliably is by putting it up on an alignment machine. They might as well align it at that point. Their "check" probably means that the tech will drive it down the road and see if it pulls to one side or another. If your car tracks straight, forget it. Save your money.

- Cooling system service
What service? All you need is a coolant flush & refill.

- Install coolant conditioner
Jesus, they are really bending you over on this. There is absolutely NO NEED for any type of coolant "conditioner."

- Lube door locks
Christ, find yourself another dealer. What an absolute waste of money. If you want to lube your locks (which I have never done, even on my 10 year old CRX before I sold it), buy some graphite lube and squirt it in there.

- Vehicle maintenance inspection
A what? Is this like a state inspection? Unless your state inspection is out of date, don't bother. If it's just a general inspection, pass. Everything above should cover 90% of what needs to be checked. It sounds more like this is a service to get you to buy "fixes" you don't need.

All of the above (plus some other stupid stuff not mentioned) costs $360 before tax. Extras include:

What stupid stuff? I wouldn't be surprised to hear this dealer tell you that you need to change your muffler fluid.

A transmission flush for $60.
Not needed. Just drain and change the fluid. There is no need for a flush.

A coolant flush for $50.
This is useful. Expensive, but useful.

All of that is quite pricy. I got my entire 30k service done at a Honda dealership WITH a valve adjustment job for under $300.

Get yourself a Helm manual and do as much as you can yourself. I try to do everything myself, although I prefer to take it in for brake inspection since I don't have the proper tools for that.

I do have a Helm manual... one of the first things I invested in.

I take my car to get oil changes by Honda because it isn't too expensive and I don't have access to a lift to get under the car, otherwise I would. Other stuff... well, it depends on what it is.

I used to let my Honda dealership change my oil, until they forgot to tighten my oil filter. I do it myself now.

nice explanation.... that is exactly what the dealer will do to your car if you let them do this 30k maintenance...

i agree with 71dsp.....just do the work yourself, save the $360 and buy something else for your car....

5g dont use stock platnum plugs.......and do as much of the work as you can.....the thought of 500 bucks for simple things like a tune up almost gives me a stroke....that stuff is so simple to do.....and as far as oil changes go, my car is lowered 2 inches and i easily change the oil without a lift......just use your jack and lift her up a couple of inches......

I don't know where you bought your 5Gen Prelude, but in the US, the 5Gen uses platinum plugs (everyone I have met with a 5Gen has platinum plugs as well):

I would NEVER get under a car that's not supported by jack stands. One person I know already had a car that was only supported by a jack fall on his hand. Not a good thing to happen!

$400 for mostly inspection and fluid flushing is too much money as it is. Most of this stuff is relatively easy as it is. Unless this is your first car and you dont even know howto change your oil, i'd do it myself. If you got a helms manual, just go thru the recommended maintenance schedule, and you should be fine. Most of the stuff that is done at 30k is merely to check to make sure things are going smoothly for your car. 60k and up is where you start replacing things.
