215/40/18s will fill in wheel gap better than stock 205/50/16s?

I have always wanted these white 18" motegi MR7s with 215/40/18 yoko paradas on it. I did some calculating on the tire diameter + sidewall height and the 18s with the lower profile (of course) were larger in total diameter than stock 16s with 205/50/16 tires, about 2 inches. So divide that by two and there is an extra inch going into the wheel gap from the top of the tire. So if I did get these would this extra inch fill in the wheel gap in the fender? I will never drop my car because I am not fond of stiff suspensions and I dont want to worry about scratching my front lip all the time, but I dont want to look like an SUV. I did these calculations assuming the 215 in the tire size is millimeters correct? And the 40 in the tire size means 40% of the width 215 correct? Any comments? Thank you

you calculated wrong. you'd only be increasing overall diameter by 0.7 inches. here's a helpful site that does the calculation for you http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

I think tirerack.com will give you overall circumference measurements as well, so you can compare tires and ratios.

yea i had a feeling i calculated wrong. Oh well. How would it look? I mean stock height seems just a little high for me, but if the 18s fit it in, I will be more interested. Maybe if i get 45 aspect ratio for a tad smoother ride?

Instead of 215/40/18 how would 215/45/18 look? I would like a smoother ride
