I came across a locally owned blue 2001 Prelude (auto trans), unfortunately it has a salvaged title and 104k miles.
It has a really attractive price, and looks very well taken care of.
It allegedly had some front left damage, then it was repaired.
The owner says the ABS and the check engine lights are on, but he believes that it is just a sensor that needs replacing.
The prelude does however has brand new wheels and tires that look great with the paint.
In conclusion, I am very nervous with this salvaged title. The car itself is very tempting, so is there anybody out there willing to help and has any suggestions or could offer some reassurance before I make a mistake?
1. Your 17 and new to Preludes, and this one has problems that the owner is unsure of.
2. It's an automatic that is out of warranty range. These automatics are extremely prone to failure, and there are many threads on this. Not to mention that people sued Honda over this.
3. Salvage title
Just keep looking and you'll find a Prelude 5 speed in good shape. What was the price on this btw?
I really just don't see why salvage titles are that horrible if the stuff has been repaired, thats the part that frustrates me.
I did see multiple threads on the Tranny issue. I'm hesitant to go manual, not quite confident in my shifting yet. I really want to get better though.
They seller was asking $4,900 OBO
About how much would it cost to get the tranny replaced?
Please don't get this car. $4900 with a salvage title is a terrible price, you can do much much better. I have seen ones <100k with a clean title go for that much. Hell, this person here has a very clean one for only $6500 : 2001 Honda Prelude Black stock
Salvage title means the car was hit pretty hard. This usually means frame damage, which is a huge b1tch for the owner. It causes tire wear, suspension problems, and sometimes even rain leaks. Not only this, but sometimes insurance companies don't have reasonable coverage for salvage title cars (e.g. they pay you almost nothing if the car gets hit again).
This would be a really bad choice, especially with an auto trans.

I tried learning on an older truck with 246k miles, the clutch was ridiculous and i just gave up.
A Honda clutch is nothing like a trucks on/off clutch. If you are not able or willing to learn to drive a manual do not buy a Prelude.
The automatic is an extremely bad idea aside from the vehicle being salvaged. They are nothing, but trouble and the vehicle you are looking at already has collision related issues. It's possible that the ABS light is from the collision... The car has new wheels most likely because the old ones were ruined in the wreck.
Only buy a salvage title if it is a steal and you are able to deal with all the problems it will have.
I really appreciate your help guys, I'm just anxious to have a car I can be proud of again.
I previously had a 2000 Saab 9-5 Aero at my dads house, I moved back in with my mom, so he sold it... I was in shock with out my boost. So now I need a new pride and joy.
i would have to agree with the above statements. if you are dead set on a auto lude i would get one without a salvage title and well under the 100,000 mile mark.

JStar944 the reason people throw around the 100,000 mile mark when referring to 00-01 autos is that Honda warrantied these from the factory till 100,000.
I'm not sure where all my paper work is, but the 97-99 may have some type of warranty after the class action suit.
98's have no warranty.. not sure about 99.
the trans to replace ( taking yours out.. and getting another one.) will be atleast $1K plus installation, dont forget shipping.. since it wont be local probably... at a minium.. your looking at $2k+ mine was $3k... my mechanic did an excellent job... the second time.
I have a 98 SS... second trans. If you find a reliable shop, they can rebuild it to practically factory floor condition... but this lude your talking about for a 1st car... this is not a good choice. It will be a money pit... and will scar you about honda products. Plenty of ludes for sale.. Id find another deal.

Salvage title.... unless the car is damn near free then I'd stay away from it. But then again, when you go to sell it there always some sucker out there who will buy a salvage title car.

I hate to break the news to you guys but I went with a BMW 318i.
Hoping that the 318 will satisfy me.
We don't really care either way. There's nothing wrong with BMWs. Of course, I've ever only owned new ones that were in warranty, out of warranty they're a bit pricey for parts and service.
