I am going to do an investigation on the 2001 Preludes, base model or Type SH. I have seen a lot of complaints about the transmission on the 2001 Preludes. Some people have second gear grinds, others with fifth gear grinds.
If you have any problem that is tranny related, please post it here with your email address, year and model, mileage when the problem occurred and a brief discription of the problem.
This is also open to any year Prelude, but the 2001's seem to have a very evident problem.
Tranny won't shift into any gear, no pressure in clutch, cracking noises from engine bay.

2001 Honda Prelude Type SH 45 miles. (different car)
Car pops out of fifth gear every 10 seconds, grinding in every gear, cracking noises from engine bay. (Car was given back to Honda dealership and everything was cancelled.)

sometime tranny wont go into 1rst or reverse at a stop without putting it into 5th or second first happened after a few hundred miles waiting for some more miles before i bring it back to the dealership

hmm.. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the prelude tranny or if it happens to a lot of manual cars. I had an 88 crx that had the same problem. It happens with my lude also. Although it would be nice to see if this happens to all manual cars or just hondas in general.

This also happens to me sometimes in my 2001 base...I dont think its a problem though because in my 99 civic SI I had the same thing happen...although I can just push the clutch in let it out push in shift to first or reverse...dont usually have to goto 2nd or 5th first...just press the clutch in a few times first....

had the same problem.. (or i shouldn't call that a problem) with my G2 teg.... THe instruction manaul did mention "To prevent grinding the gears when shifting into reverse, hold the clutch pedal depressed briefly before shifting, or shift the lever into one of the forward gears before selecting the reverse."
2000 base
Grind second and third since the first week I had it.
I tell the dealer every time I take it in for service just to cover my butt, but they never do anything about it. Some day I'll flush the fluid and try Honda MTF.

2001 base. about 3800 miles so far.
occasional grinding 3,5 gears.
dealer said shifter is normal. i suggested to them to change mtf. they said they did. shifter feels somewhat better.
on one occasion which lasted a day. every gear was hard to get into. had to step on clutch for a long time to get in gear.
very annoying!
2001 Base.
7000 kms ~ 4000 miles? (i dunno this was off my head!)
Occasional 2nd gear grind. 1st occured around 2500 miles?
I dunno sometimes its ok sometimes its not lol. Sometimes I have these sweet days were the tranny is smooth as butter. Makes me want to drive it all day. Then the next day...all knotchy and 2nd gear grinds doh!
i use to have problems with 1st gear then i replaced it with mobil1 5w30 full synth and have not have much of a problem since, and mines is a 97base. My 94 sentra SE-R has the same problems in 1st and reverse i did the same thing and got the same results.
i have a '97 prelude type sh. my first gear at times refuses to go in. i have either shift to a different gear then go back to first or if im on a hill let the car roll a little to have it go in. its not that serious but gets annoying at times.
2000 Base here.. grinds second when cold, sometimes won't go into first. Other times, smooth as silk. Dealer says it's 'normal', otoh, if it drives without blowing up, they're going to say that. 35000kms, done it from day #1. Sucks back oil sometimes, too. Sometimes it's fine. Go figure.
I assume I have no warranty when dealing with Honda. Even with a friendly dealer. It sucks.

it wont go in no matter how many times i push the clutch down i dunno if it is a problem or if its supposed to happen but its real annoying at stop signs well see what happens hen i eventually bring it to a dealership ill even say that second and 5th grind sometimes too

Since 30K I've been having problems with the tranny. At times it won't go into reverse...other times I can't get it out of reverse after backing into a spot without turning off the car a working it (wiggling like crazy). I don't want to take it in till I can afford Clutch/flywheel/and LSD. There is something really wrong here. I have I/H/E and suspension and I race only occationally. Sometimes it's impossible to row through the gears and sometimes won't go into 3rd right when racing Changing the tranny fluid helped (Honda brand) but It feels unreliable and it's embarrassing to push your car out of a spot. If every shift is not perfectly (PERFECTLY) timed during quick acceleration it will start having problems. One time after an ABS quickstop it went away. When the reverse gets stuck out/in the same is usually the case with first. I HATE my tranny. My DSM had better luck. I've been driving stick for 10 years. Agressively for 10 years too. Only had problems with a master cylinder leak from racing occassionally in my GS-T...it caused missed shifts but the resevoir was empty and it was not occational...it stayed broke till fixed. I planned to put all that stuff in myself but if they're going to remove the tranny then great....have them do it. Email if more questions. This is a worthwhile thread BTW.
Update:
I forgot to add...Getting on the freeway (basically 0-70 then chill or shifting like 1=>2=>3=>5)
Everytime I go from 3rd straight to 5th it grinds (EVERYTIME). I have to put the shifter in the fourth spot first then engage it in fifth.
Update II:

car randomly will not go into first gear. no matter what sequence of gear searching i try i still wont go in. best way i found is to hit 3rd then 2nd then into first. this is all at a stop mind you. also second gear grind when its cold and occasional 5th gear grind when warmed up.
when it works its great, but when it doesnt it sucks big time

most manuals will not go into 1st or Rev. on occasion. I've driven Honda's Nissans and Toyota's and they all happen on occasion.
Just let out clutch and re-step on the clutch, it should engage into 1st or rev w/o a hitch!
I have an 01' Base which had the 5th gear grind w/about 6k miles.
It was brought back to dealer and they replaced the 5th gear synchro, shift fork, tranny oil change and other misc parts. FREE OF CHARGE!
Pious- IMO don't skip gears when shifting. my 5th gear prob occured after I skipped from 3-5 several times, as well as a few 2-5 shifts(less than 5 times) . Don't do it!
