2000 Honda Prelude Weird transmission problem?!

Hello. I just bought a 2000 Honda prelude base model with the automatic transmission. It has 123k on it.

Now my problem is when I WOT getting on the freeway ect. Once it gets up to about 6300 RPM'S it will not upshift and it acts like its bouncing off the rev limiter! Same in it tiptronic mode too. But is shifts pretty nice when just driving around the city and all the gears work ect. But I've noticed it will sometimes be in 4th gear when I am only going 30MPH?

And the D4 light is acting up too. It does not flash or anything when I start the car up. But when driving around it will sometimes go out or get really dim, blink then go black ect.

I checked the transmission fluid and it seems clean and does not smell burnt.

So would anyone have any idea what would cause this?! Also I put 12oz of Lucas transmission stop slip in it today.

Would it be a transmission sensor doing this?

Thank you very much for any feedback!

your tranny is probably failing..this is a common problem with auto SS trannys in the prelude..i'd find the thread for you but i'm a lazy fcuk..look up the user Gerhard, he has an extensive thread all about auto SS tranny failure

30 mph in 4th gear is very likely a non-problem. 4th gear is the overdrive gear and the auto tranny will automatically shift to 3rd if you fall below a certain speed (can't remember the speed but I know it's close to 30 mph - maybe 27-28 mph - it's in the owner's manual) or if the grade logic kicks in.

Are you sure the D4 issue isn't just a bulb issue? Any shifting problems occur at the time of the D4 light, especially any CEL?

It could just be me, but I don't follow your explanation of the shifting problem you're experiencing on the highway. Explain when it won't let you upshift or downshift in SS and automatic mode if you would.

Prelude Vtir 1998, engine light on, D4 blinking, speedometer stays at 0. Need help.

Almost forgot - see if your problem is the same as the one in this recent thread. The OP got lucky and looks like it was only his vehicle speed sensor (VSS). Some of us are so used to the auto tranny problems that we think it's always a case of a failing tranny . . . always have to troubleshoot before jumping to a conclusion though.

thanks guys! I dont have any trouble with shifting when the D4 blinks/dims. Also I forgot to mention when I turn my blinker on or have my music real loud it causes D4 Light to blink/dim. So I think (hope) its just a bulb issue.

Oh and when I am on the highway when I punch it shortly after VTEC kicks in, it wont up shift it just bounces off the RPM's and wont accelerate. Some times it shakes the car. Happens both in D4 mode and SS mode.

It would be a whole lot clearer if you were throwing a trouble code. You'll have to keep looking for other symptoms to narrow it down. Does your speedometer drop at the time of the shifting issue? Does your cruise control still work? Those would be potential indicators that it could be a bad VSS (if Y to the first question and N to the second one).
