1st step for my new 2000 Honda Prelude..?

I recently purchased a 2000 Honda Prelude Base Model and just became a member of this site. I was wondering what I should do first to increase the performance of my car... Someone told me to start with intake manifold then go to exhaust and headers, but what brands are best. Thanks for the help everyone...

Google, your car is 11 years old, everything has already been done and researched, pretty easy to figure it out from there.

Yes, look around on this site and google and you will find a lot of guidance that has been discussed for many years. Try and tune the engine as a whole, don't throw two or three mods on and expect the car to be a different monster.

Intake: Your Prelude has a intake that has a valve at its input that gives the ecu the ability to shut off one two air passages below about 3900 rpms which improves throttle response, torque, and fuel economy by speeding up the air at those lower rpms.No aftermarket intake has such a feature which makes the stock intake superior in a ""overall"" sense. You can improve your throttle response somewhat by buying a JDM ,OEM TYPE S intake as shown in the link below. It fits right right into your stock lude with no problems .Because it does not really change the length of the air passage to the throttle body, your engines state of tune is not compromised.

JDM Prelude Type S Dynamic Air Intake Kit 220HP BB6 H22A S Spec

Intake manifold : The intake manifold you have is a 2 track type. Below 4900 rpm , the air goes thru a long set of runners that are tuned to the air pules going thru it at low and mid rpms and enhances power at these rpms which is ""very"" important when you have a 4cyl engine moving a 3000 lb car. Above 4900 rpm, a valve switches the air over to a low restrictive short set of runners that has a low restriction to air flow and is optimized for the air pules that go thru it at high rpms.Unless your thinking about making some major changes to your engines tunning like changing its stroke or cam you won't gain much in an ""overall"" sense by changing your intake manifold.

Manifold@Exhaust: Your exhaust system has been optimized to handle the exhaust pules that go to it which is dependent on the engines cam profile and engine stroke that your VTEC engine has and changing the exhaust, just like in the case of the intake manifold, wont really add that much to your ""overall"" performance unless you make some major mods that necessitate such a change.

A thru 4-2-1 header thats had another dose of Honda engineering since the 4th gen .

Before tinkering with your H22a4 engine ,you need to consider that all the stock parts from the intake to the muffler were tuned to work together as a team and if you just arbitrarily start installing parts from company A,B,and C you will need to be real lucky to get a superior balance of low ,mid, and high rpm power, throttle response, and fuel economy relative to your stock set up.

I would be more concern with up keep maintainence then increase a few hp. Make your engine run smooth first, then start thinking about adding parts.. U going to have plenty of time for that, research first. Get your car up to date. Fix any oil leak, vtec solenoid gasket. Cam plug, etc..etc.. Cap and rotor, plug wires, new plugs.. Timing belt, water pump. U got an 11 yrs old car, remember that.

This is the best post in this thread hands down as it is completely true. That is te 1st thing you need to do.

I'm not sure what SH DRIVER said as I and I'm sure others do, as you will do later, we just ignore what he has to say all together.

I have a question for the OP as you never sated this, is it an auto or 5spd? If it's an auto ur first mod should be 1 of these 2.

1. Sell it ASAP!

2. 5spd swap, ASAP!

The auto trannies are known to be a ticking time bomb.

From all the things you have said... I have an automatic tranny, what maintance work should be done before I start tunning the engine..?

Whats the mileage? When was the last time the T-belt and associated items replaced? Plugs, wires, cap, rotor? Hows the condition of the brakes? Condition of CV boots, ball joints? Change tranny fluid but I would get rid of that auto tranny or the car asap? Do you know any of the maintance history?

But I see you want to mod in hopes of more power so you can probably smash on your friends. If that's the case, I bring you back to the tranny being your weak point. To keep it in the best shape, do NOT use the Sport Shift mode and just drive it as a point "A"to "B" car.

Best of luck to ya though.

Nope. Just sell it. If you want an automatic, get an Accord. Otherwise purchase a 5spd Prelude.
