1st gear problem!!!

I've had my prelude for a while now. Sometimes when I shift to 1st, it wouldn't go all the way in. I know I pressed down the clutch all the way. Then after a few try it would go in. Only problem on 1st and everything smooth after. Why does this happen? what should I do when this happen?

when mine doesnt wanna go into 1st, i just push the shifter with medium pressure into 1st and let the clutch out a tad. it slips right in without any grinds/noises

I had a problem similar to this recently where it was hard to engage 1st gear then I would have to switch to 2nd then back to 1st. I found that changing the MT oil made a big difference. A lot less notchy when changing gears and able to slip into 1st better. When was the last time you changed MT oil?

Either it's a synchro or your mtf needs changing. Make sure you use honda MTF okay.

i have used both Honda MTF and synchromesh and i have to say, synchromesh shifts smoother, shifts arent as notchy in cold weather, and i f'ed up my 5th gear synchro while using honda mtf. synchromesh is cheaper too about 7.50 qt. at autozone and honda mtf is like 9 a qt

I heard this happens with a lot of hondas. I also heard it was a safety mechanism of some sort, I guess so you don't hurt your tranny. If this is true, make sure you're not going more than 10mph while shifting into first gear.

We don't even get synchro mesh here. There is no diffrence for me in cold weather or hot weather. It's all in your head lol. Your 5th gear synchro will screw up no matter what fluid you use

And its not in my head. synchromesh most definitely shifts smoother. im sure many members on this board will agree who have used both. im not sure on the name but i think member 86montecarlo ss has even said synchromesh is better after using both synchromesh and honda MTF
