Have had this happen a few times. Once when I test drove the car but thought nothing of it since I wasn't accustomed to this car yet, but since have had it happen the odd time in traffic.
If I'm sitting for a prolonged period in back-to-back traffic, or a red light, I'll sometimes just put it in Neutral. When it comes time to move forward I clutch in and move the knob toward 1st gear, and it literally feels as if it goes HALF WAY into the 1st gear slot, then as you accelerate+let off the clutch, the car just sits there and revs as if in neutral (and if you look at the knob while starting off, you can watch it snap back into Neutral).
I've gotten used to the feeling of it not going totally in, and rather than forcing it, it takes maybe 4 or 5 tries (returning to N, and pushing it back into gear) to finally get it locked into 1st.
Thoughts? If it happens, say, a few more times I'm gonna have to get it fixed. Just wondering what some of you may think it may be, or if any have had previous experiences with this.
Same thing happens to me too. What I often do is release the clutch a little while still pushing the knob inton 1st gear, and it should lock into gear. Hope it helps.
Yeah I drive a 97 SH and I literally have the same problems with first and reverse, If the second to first thing doesn't work try tapping the breaks too that's helped a few times for me. But a bent fork or bad outer sleeve you say? I'll have to check it out, Thanks guys
Haven't tried the 2nd to 1st thing but believe me I kick the brake and let the clutch in and out in a bit of a blind rage as the whole line of traffic starts laying on their horns haha.
Thanks a lot though guys. When I install a new shift boot into 'er I might just have in checked in and out whilst things are pulled apart.
Do you also get this sometimes when Going from Neutral to Reverse?
either way, best way to get out of that situation (if you're in traffic and you have to get moving).
-Clutch
-Shift to First <--- if this fails like you said
-Shift to Neutral
-RELEASE Clutch
-Clutch
-Shift back to First
its not as hard as that lists makes it look lol. I have that problem sometimes, and im so used to it now, i shift back to neutral, release clutch, clutch back in right away, shift to first. always fixes it. Same thing happens for my reverse sometimes.
I had this problem with the clutch that the previous owner had installed in the car. I swapped in an OEM clutch and don't have the problem anymore. My mechanic said the clutch disc wasn't disengaging properly.

That's interesting. I have a stock clutch with an ACT flywheel which might affect engagement slightly. Anyone else with this problem have a non-stock clutch set up?
ive got this problem if i dont have time for the 2nd to 1st trick i usually bring the motor up a few rpms with the clutch pressed and itll slide right in. stock set up as far as i know though, havent had it long enough to replace it to crack her open.
Have ya looked at the fluid level in the master cylinder? Possible fluid is low or the master or slave is going away. I've still got air in mine system after the shop replaced the master cylinder while I was on travel and I have alot of the same symptoms. Look at all the simple, (inexpensive things), first.
Good luck and let us know what you find!
