1997 Prelude SS

Hi. I am new to Preludes, but am looking at buying a 97 with the ss tranny. my friend told me to read the long post above about the transmission. The car has 87,000 miles and the guy said that he rarely used the ss. I guess my question is, would I be stupid to buy the car after reading about all of the problems? Has anyone has a good experience with the SS? Would a mechanic be able to check the transmission before i buy it to see if there are any problems? How much would a swap to a 5 speed in the St Louis Area be?? Thanks to anyone who can help. I was so excited to buy my first car and had found what i wanted, but didn't know about the tranny problems...

Some people never have problems. some go 150k miles before seeing problems. Others have problems at 50k. Some have symptoms, for others it just dies one day pulling out of the drive way.

After reading all the problems, no way would I buy a ss unless your going to swap it. As for the swap cost in your area, no idea. However if your interested in doing it yourself:

Yeah man, just like I tell everybody that asks, Just wait for a 5-spd to come around, it will, and you'll be happy. Look online, look on the moon, wherever. You'll be more satisfied with less problems.

The way I've always looked at it, is...Who'd want to drive a car when they were told, "there is a good chance the transmission will fail and you'll have a $1.5K pricetag hanging above your head"? I don't want to sound like I'm talking ****, but, that is a lot to worry about every time you get in your car, every time you leave work, every time you leave your GF/BF house, parties, out of town events...always, you worry, will it fail me now?

Good luck.

I agree with all the above posts. Look on craigslist and other online sites and your bound to find one in your area thats a 5-speed. But if its what you really want then its what you want. Just remember, you may not have problems, but theres always the chance, and that chance could cost you 2k down the road..

P.S. You'll never enjoy your cars full potential with it being an auto..

just my 2 cents..

Yes

A 5spd swap will be more expensive than just buying a 5spd Prelude.

Yeah. I would steer away from it like the others say to. I bought my auto lude before i really knew anything about them...but with a 166K on it she still drives fine really. I plan on swapping mine to a 5spd once im out of highschool and have better know how. For me i see it as a great experience more than a big expense lol
