17x7.5 rims (TIRES?) Available options...

I've done some calculations on tire size suitable for the 5th gen prelude.. which one are you guys running?

17x7.5 +48 offset

OEM: 205/50/16 (overall height: 611.4)

17" 215/40/17 (overall height: 603.8)
17" 225/40/17 (overall height: 611.8)

I would say it's better to run 225/40/17 on a 17x7.5 rim. I hear most people run 215/40/17.

Any thoughts?

if the streets in your area are relatively smooth, go with the 225/40/17's. I use to use the nitto's NT501's and they were great looking. grip was pretty lame though. I then switched to Dunlop SP8000's 215/45/17...and went through 3 sets and still planning to use this setup (if i can find these...they were discontinued last year). grip is very good, cost is pretty cheap $116/tire), and lasts pretty well for a performance tire.

215/40's are a bit too thin for normal driving, imo.

btw, before you get wheels, lower your car first.

The best choice is obvioulsy the 225/40/17 except Nitto is the only tire in the states in that size. I run 215/45/17 just for the extra protection with the crappy roads in NJ.

I need a set of tires for my Advans in 17x7.5 45 mm offset. Do 225's give me a lot more protection from curbs, or will 215's be OK?

no prob.

if you get the tires with rim protection, you can get 215's that'll protect your rims. BUT, makes sure your spokes dont come farther out than your rims... some rims do...

the sp8000's came with rim protection... a lot of potenza's come with those.

I'm lost when it comes to tires... what's rim protection?

Is it like a warranty that'll replace your rim if you damage it?

it's basically.. part of the side wall on the tire (extra rubber)... that extends further out than the rim itself.

you can look at it along the line of.. more rubber on the side wall.

225 is the width of the tire, 40 is the height of the sidewall, and 17 refers to the diameter of the tire....

thanks! Someone told me the 40 meant that the sidewall was 40% of the width of the tire. That wouldn't make much sense...

actually... that someone was right. that's exactly what it means.

a 225/40/17 is 225mm wide, has a 90mm sidewall (225mm * .40), and mounts on a 17" rim. to get the "theoretical" outside diameter you'd take 90mm * 2 + 17" = 24.08"

it's better to check the tire makers specs. a smaller than stock tire will reduce your top speed but increase your acceleration and increase engine speed required for any given cruising speed. a larger than stock tire will increase your top speed and decrease engine speed for cruising, but significantly reduce accceleration. BOTH will cause your speedometer and odometer to be inaccurate.

i've been riding on 215/40/17 potenza s-02 and s-03s for a good amount of time now, on pretty bad city streets, and haven't had any problems yet except a flat (and ruined) tire. however, i am very careful of speed going over speedbumps, potholes, cracks/crevice, and those 1.5" thick metal plates that the sf dpw loves to liberally sprinkle on bad streets.
