01 SH Reverse problems?

Ok... I've searched this whole site for problems with the reverse gear. Last night.. I was racing and I vtec'ed my whole way home... about 15 miles or so. I missed a shift between 2nd-3rd, then I heard a grind in my shift into 2nd gear after I redlined 1st. Then I'm home with a nice parking up front but noticed that my car wouldn't shift into reverse! So I turned off the car and turned it back on but it still wouldn't go in. I then kinda forced it into reverse and parked it first. I'm hoping that it'll get better in the morning but it seems pretty bad and most of the time it goes away or you can go around that by shifting into neutral, letting go of clutch, then step on clutch and shift into reverse? Well, it didnt' work for me =( I have some basic mods on the car and I know they'll give me sh*t about my car. Please help guys. The car only has 9,000 miles on it. Sorry about the long post.

Shift into second first before puttin git in reverse. I find that sometimes it grinds when I quickly put it rev so I go thru second on my way to rev.

this actually happened to me a couple of times when my car was newer from shifting so hard and mishifting, just jam it in reverse really hard and if it doesn't stay, just hold the stick back then go push the thortle, and after a day or something, it should be able to go back into reverse back to normal...hopefully that made sense

Same here. Sometimes I can't shift into reverse until I shift back to neutral then reverse for about 3 times. Shifting into reverse isn't as smooth as shifting to first or other gears. Why? I don't race alot but have grind during the first couple of weeks when I got my lude. I only have 3,200 miles on it.

i believe it happens only from harsh mishifts

I recently got my car back from the dealership for servicing tranmission problems.

Every time I shift into reverse it grinds...no matter how softly I do it.

Maybe the car is due for another trip back to the dealership.

I have the same problem and I know what is wrong (doesn't do ya much good though):

When you miss you're shift into 3rd gear, 99% of the time you're throwing it in between the 3rd and 5th gear, which will eventually wear out your 5th gear synchro. When you miss the gear you're reverse lockout comes on because it thinks your 5th gear synchro just went out and it locks out reverse cause when your 5th gear synchro is out, like mine is, it slams out of gear and would go into reverse on the highway if the lockout wasn't activated.

On cars whose 5th gear synchro is fine, it should go into reverse after a little bit of driving. If it doesn't go into reverse, you CAN force it in, but it's not good on the tranny. If it doesn't go in, you've got to:

Clutch in, pull the shifter back into reverse, it wont go in, but just pull it back, let the clutch out SLOW, it'll grind and pop in, if it doesn't the first time and grinds and pops back into nuetral, you've got to pull back harder. After a few times of doing that it will go into reverse. Drive in reverse for a little while. Then it will probably get stuck in reverse and you'll probably freak, but don't worry. Now you've got to do the same thing in the opposite order. Clutch in, push up on the shifter, let the clutch out slow, it'll grind and pop out, then you should be able to move back and forth into reverse but it will be really hard to get in and out the first 5-6 times but then it will be fine.

I abosolutly do not recommend doing this. But I had to do it today and am going to have to do it again tomorrow.

Good luck.

So the reverse thing happens to everyone? How often does it come back? Honda just called me and said I probably abused it and it should go away and if not I'll have to pay for a new transmission??!! Isn't it just a bent shift fork?

You should never be forcing your car into any gear.

Anytime I have problems getting a car (any car, not just my Prelude) in reverse, I try these things..

1. neutral
2. clutch out
3. blip throttle (nothing harsh... maybe up to 2000 max.. just to get things "spinning" )
4. then push the clutch back in and try reverse again.

if it's still no good...

1. clutch in
2. put the car in any forward gear (sometimes you can't get into 1st with a cold tranny)
3. clutch out a bit and back in (just enough to nudge forward *slightly*.. again, to get things spinning)
4. try reverse again

if it's *still* no good..

1. clutch in
2. put it in reverse as far as you can get it (DON'T force it)
3. *s l o w l y* clutch out while gently, but firmly, pulling the shifter back.. it should just "slip" into reverse without any crunching or grinding
4. I usually push the clutch back in as soon as it slips into gear.. after all that time I need to check behind me again before backing up.
