All teams meet up at Battelle-Darby Creek (1775 Darby Creek Dr. Galloway, OH 43119) at 11:00 am. Each team will consist of a driver and a navigator. These two positions can be switched as many times as the team would like. Each team should arrive with the following items: a Prelude (not a requirement, but given that they are the sexiest, fastest, and most desirable machines on the road, one is preferred), a map (navigation units ARE ALLOWED and also HIGHLY RECOMMENDED), a cell phone, a digital camera with fully charged batteries and an empty memory card for said camera. Also, feel free to decorate your chariot in any manner you see fit.
Once all the teams have arrived, each will be given a sealed envelope containing a checklist full of ways to earn points and win the rally. At 12:00 pm (on the dot) all teams will open their envelopes and the event will begin. Inside the envelopes will be a list of pictures that the team must take in order to earn points. Points will be awarded based on the difficulty required to obtain each picture. As an example, ‘Take a picture of your car in front of a church’ may only be worth 1 point, whereas ‘Take a picture of a girl (or guy) in a bikini posing next to your car’ may be worth 3 points.
All of the pictures are subject to peer review at Rule 3 (our final destination). Once there, we will vote on the validity of questionable pictures through majority rule. Your team will be given the chance to argue on behalf of your picture (Scattegories style) in the hope of swinging favor. This would apply in places where an attempt to be clever was made, but the group must decide if the picture is, in fact, lame and unworthy of points. As an example, the sheet says, “Take a picture of your car next to an airplane,” so you fold up a paper airplane and throw it on the ground next to your car before snapping a photo. In this case, participants would vote if that photo was clever or lame, awarding points accordingly. However, if one clearly drove to Port Columbus, snuck on the tarmac, and got a picture next to a 747, there would be no need to vote (because you are obviously badass).
The second half of the list will have discretionary points to be awarded. These will be larger in number (and worth 5 points each, as opposed to 1-3), and only one team can earn points for any given task on the sheet. There will be challenges such as “Take a photo of the most expensive car you see,” or Take the best “Laugh at Rice” photo. Each challenge entry will have a ‘winning team,’ which will be the only team to score points in that category. Your team will have FIVE hours with which to try to earn as many points as possible with the pictures on your memory card.
At 5:00 pm, all teams are to meet at Rule 3 in Pickerington (650 Windmiller Dr. Pickerington, OH) to have dinner and look at everyone’s pictures and award points. At Rule 3 we will have a laptop with a universal memory card reader so that we can view all the pictures that were taken during the rally, vote, and then award points. For every 5 minutes that any team is late to Rule 3, that team will lose 3 points from their final point tally. There will be prizes for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams.
This rally will start on one end of Columbus and end on almost the complete opposite side of the city. This leaves the entire city of Columbus open as your playground to put together all the pictures you need to win. This game will produce tons of hilarious pictures for the end-of-year DVD and photos to post on the website. We will acquire a wealth of hilarious stories to share for years to come. I’d love to hear how someone got a girl in a bikini to pose next to their car (in April!)—it’ll allow us to be creative. We will also be able to drive our cars on a variety of roads all over Columbus with a fellow OHPOCer riding shotgun the whole time. Some of the challenges will require you to drive on some great roads and see some amazing scenery. It will be completely free-form, allowing you the freedom to go where you please and shoot whatever you want in order to win. Some of the challenges will be absolutely hilarious and require some serious brass balls to acquire. I don’t want to give them away, so they are a surprise when the time comes. I will GUARENTEE hilarity and one of the most fun meets we’ve ever had. Car clubs will copy this for years to come. Post below with if you will participate in the rally and whether you need a navigator or wish to volunteer as one.
