Trans Am

Well, yesterday I pull up at a light next to this red older Trans Am. I wasn't sure he wanted to race because he didn't even look at me, but when the light turned green, he went, with me shortly thereafter. I'm not big into Trans Ams, but if I had to guess, I'd say it was about a 95-96 model. He had some aftermarket exhaust on it but the thing sounded pretty rough. I didn't see it smoking or anything, but it did sound like it had had a rough life. I still thought he would smoke me, but I went for it anyways. He even got about a 3/4 car jump on me. We shut it down at about 60 mph (because of traffic ahead) with me already a half a car length ahead of him and still pulling. Shortly thereafter, I pulled off into Taco Bell and he honked twice while giving me a friendly wave. I could understand if it was the V6 Firebird because it's not uncommon for me to rape them, but this was defintely a V8 Trans Am. On the downside, it was an automatic. A few things come to mind though. I'm thinking he was either toying with me or his car was just too ragged out. Even so, I though a ragged Trans Am would still beat me. Oh well, it felt good nonetheless and I did it right with my buddy who drives a big 76 Ford Truck (w/a 460) driving behind me. This was especially awesome because he's the the guy (I'm sure everyone knows a few) who constantly bags on "rice burners" and preaches American Muscle, there's no replacement for displacement, etc. In any case, it was fun and satisfying.

Well, that 15.8 run was a while back in 90+ weather and before I learned when to shift, etc. The weather was cool that night and it really makes a difference to the short ram when the air is colder. I'm sure I'm significantly lower, but in any case, I agree that a 15.x is slow for what kind of car that was. I'm fairly sure it was a V8, because it had all the Trans Am trim and it definitely sounded like a V8. I had a V6 Camaro with Flowmasters on it in the past and the sound is just different. I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain it was a V8. However, it surely ran like a V6. I don't know for sure one way or the other but I do know it was great to win, just like any other race. Now if I could just get fast enough for those effin SRT-4's.
