It's like shifting gears (very fast of course), there is no way you can make power at the exact point.
Thanks petern101 I was just about to say that

If the question comes upon me of VTEC signifying a loss in power, I'd say it like this; when VTEC kicks in, the large increase in power that you feel in the H22 but not the K20 shows that from 3-5200 H22s are NOT making the power they could. Seeing as the K20 feels very gradual, it shows that in that 3-5200 range the K20 IS making efficient power, so when the cam switches over at 6000 in the K20, it's still making the same power as H22, however because the K20 was putting out more power from 3-6000 it FEELS as if it's not increasing in power as greatly at the switchover. I couldn't find a way to put this in words the best so I'm sure nobody has any idea what I'm trying to say, but all in all the H22 does not lose power because of VTEC, but UP UNTIL VTEC it is not making the power it could which is why there's such a jump in power in the H22 but not as much of a jump in the K20.

i gotcha, k20=catches up to vtec so no jump when it is engaged h22= looses power before vtec then jumps when it engages, so to the driver it would feel as if the k20 wasnt making the power because of being in the mindset of the h22 kick at vtec the driver would assume it wasnt producing that sudden burst of power when i reality is was just a smooth transition insted of the hell yeah here comes vtec feeling.

I owned one at the same time I had my Prelude, 06 coupe. In stock form they are not that impressive, you get a real tune and put some good suspension on it and holy crap. Also i-VTEC is better than older VTEC in theory, in application it gives the manufacturer one more way to make the car less pure to meet emissions. Throttle by wire is also another way to make the car more emissions/mileage friendly, hence the throttle hang between shifts.

I don't have the Civic Si because I ended up keeping the Prelude instead and it's a choice that I'm glad I made. A clean Prelude will probably be a sort of collectible someday, a Civic won't.
