My 00 Prelude vs 00 Civic Si

So I never really race my Prelude, it's got 105k and it's sorta a commuter car now but I'm cruising downtown Sacramento and I come up on this 00ish Civic Coupe Si. I see it's got a big pipe for an exhaust and has some 18's on her so I figure that's cool. Well I go to pass him and he proceeds to match my speed. Well, I look around for popo and gas it a little to see if he's gonna try. He does, we then accelerate and he stays with me. Now I'm very surprised. Hmmm... my Prelude is stock by the way. No big wheels, no exhaust, no intake, plain stock. He gives up, or I continue gassing, and I'm in front with him right behind me. We come up on traffic and it lightens so we both go. I drop to 4th and we both take off. Surprisingly, he is again right behind me, not enough to pass as there was another lane he could have chosen but surprised that Civic Si Coupe coupe stay with me. We got to 110 and I notice I start to pull about a car length, then I see 120 on the speedo, and the gap continues to widen. I get to 130 and he's 4-5 car lengths back.

I let up and exit the freeway and he follows wanting to continue but I don't follow and he continues on his merry way. Needless to say that was fun but it won't happen again. Anyhow, just wanted to post that. Cheers!

A win is a win so good job on the win!!! I'm going to assume you have a 5spd manual in your Prelude? The SI should not have been right behind you unless he had more than just simple bolt ons.

What speed were you doing when you dropped it down to 4th gear? I've raced modded 99-00 Civic SIs before and they don't stand a chance unless they're heavily modded. I've raced them even when I only had Intake/Exhaust. From a 60-70mph roll, I'd pull away in 3rd gear and be about 2-3 cars ahead by the end of 3rd. When I shift into 4th gear, I'm pretty much gone because their top end is nowhere near as powerful as our top end. I've raced some off the line up to about 90-100mph and the gap is even worst. Of course, if the SI if force inducted then I would be the one seeing their taillights disappear.

Of course, this year a few years ago that these races occurred. I'm too old now to be street racing.

Are civic Si's speed limited? That would explain the pulling away above 110. Most Hondas that are governed are speed limited at 112.5 mph. You should've pulled well before that though. Either way, a win is a win.

^^^The SIs aren't speed limited. It's just that the Prelude has a much better top end than the Civic SI. The Civic SI just dies down after 100mph unless it's heavily modded.

Stock for stock we have 40 more HP and a little over 40 TQ advantage on an Si. It's biggest downfall is probably those 18's they were riding on. Throw a set of 15's on your lude, even with same type of tires and you'll see an improvement. Anyway... good win, should've invited him to a track and done a "best of 3" run to really see how close or far it'd be. It's all in good fun
