WBNS 10TV : 8 Arrested In Drag Racing Sting Operation - WBNS-10TV, Central Ohio's News Leader
DELAWARE, Ohio — Eight people were arrested early Saturday morning during a drag racing sting operation near the Franklin-Delaware county line, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The patrol said that motorists have complained during the past month about racing on Interstate 71 north of Polaris Parkway, 10TV's Brittany Westbrook reported.
Troopers, along with officers from Genoa Township and Westerville, used aerial surveillance to observe the drivers as they gathered late Friday night at a restaurant on Polaris Parkway.
Troopers said they watched from above as 20 cars left the restaurant and headed north on I-71. Once on the freeway, three of the drivers allegedly used their cars to block traffic while more than a dozen others raced at speeds exceeding 100 mph, Westbrook reported.
Aided by the aerial surveillance and a roadblock on state Route 3 near Plum Road, officers stopped and arrested eight drivers after they exited the freeway.
The drivers were charged with drag racing, a first-degree misdemeanor that is punishable by six months in jail, a $1,000 fine and loss of their licenses for up to three years.
Those arrested by the patrol were identified as brothers Anthony Gray, 23, and Eric Gray, 24; Christopher Kolb, 38; Stephen Lenegar, 20; Andrew Meade, 25; Kyle Sargent, 24; Sean Smith, 20, and Jason Wyne, 21.
