wiring for 3 DVC subs...

A friend is letting me borrow his 3x10 box for a time since he has not the amp. The box is a bandpass box with 3 DVC 10 inch subs.

He does not know what the impedance of the subs is, but I am pretty sure they are 4 ohm. I will likely take an meter to it to check before hooking everything up.

At any rate, the wiring on the subs is a bit odd and I was wondering what the best way to get a 2 ohm load (or as close as possible) on one channel would be for this box.

The way they are wired, assuming a 4 ohm coil. It looks as though they would be around 18 ohms.. which seems ridiculous (though it would explain why he thinks that a 400 watt amp wouldn't push them.

Right now it looks like it is series from the first coil to the second sub, which has the two coils in parallel, then series through the other 3 coils. I will try to "draw it"
Code:
----P N------P N--------P N------P N--------P N---------
             | |
             P N

I am definately not an expert on audio wiring for what will sound best but from a strictly electrical standpoint I would think you would want your load to be evenly distributed.

So the most even distribution would be to run each pair of voice coils in parallel, then each speaker in series. This should produce a 6ohm load overall (assuming each vc is 4hom).

You can also achieve a 3 and 1.5 ohm load but the coils will not all be seeing the same amount of current. To create a 3ohm load, put four voice coils in parallel in series with the other two voice coils in parallel. The pair of voice coils that is in series with the other fou will be putting out more power than the because those two will be driven by the same current that is driving all four of the other vc's.

I would say that the best option in my opinion, once again speaking from an electrical standpoint would be to go with the 6ohm load, or don't use all three subs and wire two vc's in series with the other two vc's for a 4ohm load.

Hope that helps....let me know if I need to explain any of this in graphical form.

3 DVC drivers with Voice Coils in Series / Parallel
Connecting the two voice coils of each driver in series (+ to -) and the drivers themselves in parallel (+ to +, etc.) will result in the following impedance:

Dual-4 Ohm Subwoofers: 2.67 Ohms

Awesome. Thats what I was thinking about doing, and I was pretty sure it woul dbe 2.67, but I wasn't absolutely sure.

Thanks a bunch.
