I wouldn't go with a Zapco amp for subs, it's a waste. I'd recommend a Cadence A5HC ($310@woofersetc.com) with two 10W3D2's (series the VC's), that amp does about 700 watts @2ohms and it's class D so it won't stress your alt. The subs should run about $450 with a box at your shop. Installation labor should be about $100 and I'd bring your own wires etc. as the stuff they sell will be expensive. Go with a smaller sized box, if JL recommends .75-1.0 cubic foot go with like a .8 ft^3 box. That'll give a nice hump in the upper bass that sounds better with rap. With that amp volume will not be an issue either.
To answer your question though, $950 isn't bad for what you're getting. Just try to give the subs at least 200 watts each.
Zapco makes really good amps, I don't think you should waste this quality on subs. It's harder to hear distortion etc. in subs anyways. You want to buy power and above 600 watts you want to go with class D. The Cadence will sound great and it won't draw tons of current.
You mean $200 for the amp with bass controller or just the bass controller? $950 for the subs, with box, and amp with wiring etc. installed sounds like a good deal to me (especially at a local shop.) I must confess I don't know much about the various Zapco models. You should check how much it goes for online and that it actually does 500 watts bridged.
$250 for a bass control? You're kidding right? Are you using an aftermarket deck? If so I'd use the fade function on that to control sub volume. If not, I can recommend a high quality LOC that you can mount up front that will do the same thing for $30. The other prices seem good but I'd strongly recommend you go to zapco.com and check the power specs on the amp.
the lady said i cfould either get the zapco volume control to control the bass, which would work with the zapco amp or i could do "crossovers" she said crossovers would cost 215$ installed and weren't really as good.
i have a nakamichi cd-45z headunit. it has a subout but no sub volume control.

The best thing would be a non-fading pre-out but I don't think the Nak has that. Conventional fade simultaneously reduces the front while increasing the rear signal level (or vice versa.) A non-fading pre-out controls the signal level independently of the other pre-outs (in effect becoming a volume control.) My rather inexpensive Alpine deck has this option.
Uh, so I guess there's no way of talking you out of spending $250. Ya know, you could see how the fade works and if you don't like get your fancy bass control. Oh well, can't say I didn't try
