Yes thanks for answering my stupid question. I just recently got a PPI amp 2200 and a pair of mbquart psc 216. The installer set my "gain" on the amp but i was wondering what does the "gain" do? and if i were to tweak it how would i go about setting "gain?" oh yeah, the mbquart tweeters were pretty damn harsh, even after setting the crossovers and turning treble down all the way, i think its because i installed them on the door by the window, and so the pointed directly at me, now i rotated them so that they aim at the dome lights, and it sounds perfect. Godamn this is best investment i've made.

no its not because of it the window. its becuase THEY ARE MB QUARTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you need an eq now. ok here is what a gain is. say your amp has a 4 volt pre out you set your amp to 4 volt in. all gain does it match the output of your deck to the amp. if you turn the gain down a tad youll turn down the mids and tweets together not just the tweets. and they aim at the dome lights? where?

hmm so what happens if i turn up the gain? would i get better detail in my mids? you said a 4 volt preout? um.. you mean the preout for my headunit? My headunit is a nakamichi 45z. So the gain is pretty much what i tell the amp how much voltage is going to it from the headunit? yeah the stock tweeters aimed horizontally, and when i got the quart tweeters i read a few old posts on this board and some other audio boards and they all say that the mbquarts sound harsh to people because they don't know how to aim them right, they said that metal tweeters are supposed to be aimed off axis, especially with the mbquarts as that's how they're designed to be used. So what i did was i bent the metal brace/strip that holds the tweeter to the door panel so that it aims the tweeters at the ceiling, basically the tweeter is hidden behind the stock grill where the stock tweeter used to sit, so when i re aim the mbquart you still can't see it. now it ain't harsh anymore, just crisp and clean.

Basically think of the gain as a variable resistor. The amplifier output will clip at a given input voltage. Since it has to accept a wide range of input signal strengthes they put the gain in there to match (increase/reduce) it to your particular headunit (or source.) Turning the gain up or down will only mean your amp will clip at a lower (or higher) volume setting on you headunit. You may perceive this as being "louder" but in reality the maximum volume hasn't changed. The best thing do is use the highest pre-amp voltage signal to increase the signal-to-noise ratio. Go to carsound.com to David Navone's forum and search for "gain setting" and it you'll find the correct way to set gains.

I just have a comment here.

I refuse to believe that any speaker is designed to be mounted that way. There is no way to smooth out the harshness of metalic tweets, except to reflect the sound off surfaces that will change its characteristics. However, this degrades sound quality because the sound hits your ears at different times. I have an Alpine PXA-H600 DSP with time correction to help eliminate reflections. It is a great improvement and allows me to move my soundstage all over. I hate metalic tweets, but, to each his own.
