Weird problems.. am i nutz?

Ok..

so i bought an eclipse 5423 used from a local stereo store.

Hooked it up in my 5g, didn't sound right.

I had an old eclipse 54430 in my last prelude, and it sound really good. Bass was really deep on just the factory speakers.

This 5423 didn't sound too great. The bass wasn't deep, and it distorted really easy. So i thought the AFBS was the problem... re-wired w/o the AFBS...

ran stock speakers. Still didn't sound right...

thought the 2ohm's in the rear was causing problems.

went out and bought some eclipse 6x9's today...

hooked them up, still not right.

Checked all my settings on the headunit, everything looks ok.

Here is the weird part...

I fade all the way to front, speakers kick, good bass, sounds good.

Fade all the way to the rear, 6x9's thump good.

I put it in the middle, or 3/4 front or 3/4 rear... sounds like crap.

I dunno whats going on... anyone have any ideas?

I am gonna take it back to the place i got it, but i don't know if there is a better way to explain it or not?

Thanks for any input.

just using the head unit...

rated at 50x4

...

eclipse units are usually under rated too...

my last one was only rated at 13x4, but it sounded so good, and defantly thumped....

haha

when you fade, you aren't transfering power, you are just cutting out either the fronts or the rear...

unless this is some magical unit that transfers the power from the front speakers to the rear...

i'm not a huge audio person, so this is just kinda weird....

that my old 55430 at 13x4 sounded 100x better than my new 5423 at 50x4...

almost sounds like they're not in phase
make sure all the positives and negative connections on the speakers match up with the headunits

Yup, exactly what happens when the front & rear are out of phase.

I think your problem is the ACOUSTIC FEEDBACK SYSTEM. Its somehow getting screwy with the feedback that it is getting with the fronts and rears. Get rid of this and you should be okay. This is the only thing I can think of right now.

i want to thank you two for the advice about the phasing...

i new the rear's were wired up ok because i went right from the AFBS harness to the speakers...

so i pulled out the door speakers, and there weren't stock connectors on them, and there was some crappy wire being run from them..

so i disconnected both, turned on the stereo, set the fader at 0...

rears sounded great... plugged in the fronts the opposite of how they were hooked up, and it thumps like the eclipse it is.

Great info, saved me a LOT of headache.. i was actually loosing sleep over this last night.
