When I got my prelude last year, the audio components had potential, but were still a mess. To start, it has a pioneer 6000HDVD head unit. Which... has an internal 6 disc CD/DVD changer. It also has touch screen sweetness. They have newer better ones out now that are totally amazing. Anyway I am running infinity speakers all the way around. I have 6-1/2 in door speakers rated at 90w RMS@ 4ohms. They were a small hassle to install though. Since they are rated so high, they have a large magnet and are a very tight fit in the little cone in the door. I had to use really long drywall screws to get them in. Also I have Infinity Kappa 6''9 in speakers in the rear rated at 110w RMS at 2 ohms. These were also a hassle to install. Since they are very large with the +1 woofer cone and a huge magnet, I had to take one of the springs out that holds the trunk up. The trunk doesn't stay up anymore but the speakers are great. I also had to cut off the lip around the speaker covers. What I'm saying is if you want and easy audio system, this isn't it... but if you want one that is totally original, this works. They are both great and I highly reccommend them. Instead of using that crazy acustic feedback system the speakers are powered by an Alpine V12 4-channel amp. I mostly listen to my ipod through the head unit now that I got the $50 ipod connector from pioneer. I took out the tweeter on the drivers side because the kappas in the back have two tweeters and provide ample highs. But its a great system."new" car Photo Gallery - Photo 20 of 36 by Ethan - MySpace Photos "new" car Photo Gallery - Photo 21 of 36 by Ethan - MySpace Photos "new" car Photo Gallery - Photo 22 of 36 by Ethan - MySpace Photos "new" car Photo Gallery - Photo 34 of 36 by Ethan - MySpace Photos "new" car Photo Gallery - Photo 35 of 36 by Ethan - MySpace Photos

You might have issues with your amp overheating if you mount it in that orientation. The heatsink only works if its mounted flat on its bottom. This is assuming it doesn't have a fan.

Been there, done that. Here is the best solution: Gas Struts for Trunk Here is the bad news though: You will have to take the speakers back out to drill the holes if you go that route.
I spent about 4 hours trying to put that damn spring back in and it is near impossible without the tool that Honda sells to do it. I got it to throw sparks while shooting around in the trunk a few times before giving up on it.

hm, yea it gets pretty hot, but it was in the car before I bought it. I just put all the speakers in and modded the head unit a bit. SO... i rekon it's been in there for like two years and I use it every day. I would probably worry if I was pushin some major power to some subs or something but I think I'll just leave it. And yea I tried putting that spring back in... didn't happen. It was probably a bad idea to take it our
If the amp hasn't gone into thermal protection yet, don't worry about it. Being that it is an alpine, I'm sure it must have an overload circuit built in and it will just turn itself off if it gets to hot so it doesn't destroy itself. However the 2ohm speakers will make it get hotter than 4ohms speakers would, if that is what was in there before.
Gas shocks like the ones in that write-up work great, and now I can use my trunk again. No more trunk lid falling on my head (I can assure you, that damn thing hurts like hell when you knock the prop-up board out ).
I got mine from Pep Boys, but they had to special order one of them. They were like $25 for the pair. One of those two shocks listed in that write up is WAY stronger than the other (its the one with the square holes that is stronger, I forget the part numbers) and if you used just that one it might work by itself. I tried it with two of the round islet ones first (because they didn't have to be special ordered) and even with two of them, they were too weak to hold the trunk lid up.
Now, I have one of each, and my trunk flies open when I pull the release. I was initially worried that it would break the latch, but no issues so far.... no rattles or bending of anything.
INow, I have one of each, and my trunk flies open when I pull the release.
LOl! That sounds kinda crazy...crazy enough that it just might work. Hm, I don't have a pep boys anywhere near me but I'll definately look into it. I use my work shoes to hold the trunk right now
I just added two 10'' MTX thunder 5500's to my setup. As of now they are in a truck box in my trunk, taking up alot of space. Gonna try once it warms up to build a custom fiberglass box. I might just build it with mdf and cover it with carpet, have'nt made up my mind yet. I think i'm gonna mount just one sub on the right back corner of the trunk see how it works out; if not loud enough will do the same with the other side. I have two amps in my car now
If you are only running one 12'', why the need for 3 amps? Like one for the rear speakers and one for the front, then one for the sub? Also, man that's alot of power and ground wires to run around even with splitters, i wouldn't wanna do that

Yep, that is how I've got them set up. One is under the passenger seat, the other two are bolted to the floor of the trunk. It was quite a bit of wiring....I don't think I will being running that much wire inside my car ever again. Very time consuming.
yea dude just addin that extra amp for the subs took me like 3-4 hours. I would get so far before i realized I needed another part or the wiring was in the way of somethin, I love and hate everything about cars. My two are crankin way more power than i'll ever use, especially the one for just my speakers. Now that i got subs, I turned the bass down on them so the amp's hardly workin and they will still overpower the subs very easily, the 2 ohm ones are extremely loud. Also how's that effect the power consumtion.... do you have a capacitor or somethin? I can't imagine three amps, power blinks with two. Hey, I wanna see some pics of your setup if ya got any
I made a plywood floor for the trunk with a cutout for the sub enclosure, which is ported and opens into the spare tire well (I have no spare in the car). Since that picture I have cleaned up the wiring a bit and put in the gas shocks to hold up the trunk lid. The MTX amp goes to my sub and the kicker is driving my rear speakers.
I had a 5 farad cap with this setup in my last car, but I didn't transfer it over to the 'lude with the rest of my system. Adding a cap actually makes the issue of overdrawing current from the alternator worse, not better. I only appears to help because it makes the lights dimmer all the time, so they don't appear to pulse as much. If I go easy on the volume knob (I usually do, my earth shaking volume level days are behind me), I don't have pulsing lights or any other charging problems. I did just have to replace a battery though...
that's a sweet setup. My car didn't come with a mat for the trunk either so i've been planning on a plywood one too, hadn't got around to it yet. I couldn't handle not havin trunk space though like that, i mounted my sub amp right below the trunk lid, nicely outta the way. I know how you feel about the earth shaking days. My last car had 2 12's and they were always all the way up. So loud you couldn't even hear the rest of the music, just brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr brrrrrrrrrrrrr bbbrrrrrrrrr. My friends do that now, i'm tired of it though, i keep my subs down low enough now so i can just feel them, a good balanced sound. Ya ill take some pics in the mornin and put em up here.
Yeah, the lack of trunk space is a bit of a pain. I just end up throwing stuff on top of my amps from time to time. I have to be careful though, because the MTX has been known to melt plastic bags .
So is there a cutout in the floor around the sub enclosure? If not, then how do you plan to remove the floor to access the spare tire? Also, that is a kind of odd mounting location for your amp...Have you thought about mounting it to the bottom of the trunk lid so it is out of the way?
ya shoe does alright except when its windy, then it just hurts! Ha, no ill have to take out the box for the spare, its not terribly heavy or anything. I did cut out a slot to go around the amp though. I did think about mounting the amp on the trunk but didn't wanna hassle with the wiring assosiated with moving the amp up and down. It's not too bad, I like the looks of it there really. But ya its been not too much fun doing it all, but I think it worked out nicley. Thanks for the props Gas shocks for trunk... next project
