Thinking of switching out my HU

I've had my Alpine 9855 for several months now, however haven't really had the time to really sit down and figure this thing out. Here is the problem. I am not one knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff. After much reading, it seems that this HU is for those that know what the hell they are doing. The last time I had a HU in a car was when I was 16, and I think I had the Pioneer Premier DEH-P840MP (the motorized unit). It was SO simple to use. There was a area to adjust bass, treble, change the LOUD settings, and voila. Since then, it seems headunits have become extremely technical. For example, this HU doesn't have a bass/treble setting really. You have to go to the PRO settings and adjust the EQ, time correction, etc. I have NO idea what any of that **** is. So it seems that this HU just isn't right for me, because I can't adjust that stuff for the life of me.

All I want is a headunit that will play my music, including MP3s, is easy to use, and sounds good, because this headunit makes me feel straight retarded. Can anyone suggest anything to me? I was looking at the Pioneer Premier DEH-P680MP which is about $200 shipped on eBay brand new. I could really use your guys help, thanks!

`John

You have a great headunit that has a lot of potential. Just read up on how to adjust and fine tune the system. Once it's configured, you'll have a system that sounds really good. If you sell the headunit and buy a p680, you'll waste time and money in the transition.

If you adjust the lower band of the EQ, ie from 220Hz down to as low as it goes, those are the base frequencies. As you move to higher frequencies you are adjusting the midrange and the treble, that's pretty much how the "bass/trebel/loud settings down anyway" They are just preset EQ's.

Good luck,
David

We'll swap.

Send me your 9855 and I'll send you my 2 week old 9856.

Haha, well I can understand your frustration with that deck. Navigation on those glide-touch decks is a total PITA. Seriously, I can't stand them. Have you looked into the EZ line from Kenwood? I used to sell tons of the EZ500's to customers like you. Personally, I'd take the 9856 over the 9855. If you can find any of last year's Pioneers (which you can, easily) go with one of those. They're not crazy flashy, simple to use, logical interfaces and don't use that STUPID single knob setup, like the new Pioneer's do.

what's the diff. from the 9856 and 9855? And don't most pioneers only have one knob?

The 9855 is last years model that has the glide-touch, bio-lite display, and uses the now discontinued & hard to find kca-420i ipod interface. The 9856 is this year's model that ditched the annoying glide-touch and uses alpine's new built in full-speed interface for ipod connectivity. ($30 cable required to use it) The bio-lite display is now moved to the 9857, which is just like the 9856 except for the display and it has an advanced "quick search" feature for ipods. The 9856/9857 are great decks that give you the features of the 9855 but without the frustrating menu's & interface.

As for Pioneers, they always had one knob for volume and another knob (really an x-button like a game controller) across from it, to navigate through menus/features, also the audio adjustment menu has it's own button on the face, to access it easily. The new Pioneers only have one knob and they condensed the volume and menus into that one knob. You'll either like it or hate it, so play around with the new Pioneers in a store and see what you think.

The Pioneer DEH-P880prs says that it has auto EQ and auto time alignment. After reading the specs on the Pioner DEH-p780mp, it says that it has Digital Sound Processor with 16-band graphic EQ and time alignment. Will that essentially be the same as my 9855? I want something that does that sh** for me, and is simple to use. I would prefer to get the 780mp due to its looks and price, but if I have to, I'll get the 880prs. Also, what's the diff. from the 7800mp and the 780mp? Are there any other GOOD Pioneer contenders along w/ those two?

Also, I'm highly debating getting rid of my 10w7 as I don't see myself really using it to its full potential, where somebody else really should. Some guy is selling his 1 month old 10" L7 in a Kicker box (supposedly it's a kicker box) for $225 shipped, and I was thinking of maybe jumping on that. Would my 500/1 work well w/ the L7? Here are pics of it btw:

For some reason, that enclosure looks a tad on the small side to me, but I dunno. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

^^ That enclosure looks to be about 1 cubic foot (air space). It does seem a bit small for that sub.

The time alignment on the 780mp and the 880prs are different. With the 780mp, you tell the HU where you want the sound focused, via the audio adjustment menu. With the 880prs, it comes with a mic that you attach to the driver's headrest, you hit auto configure on the HU, exit the car & close all the doors and it'll do a series of tests to adjust the time alignment to the position of the mic. It's a much better & precise way of doing time alignment. (if you're into that stuff) The difference between the 7800mp and the 780mp? Nothing. The 780mp is the Premier line's version. It just says "Premier" on the face and comes with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty instead of 1 year for the standard 7800mp.

I just special ordered a pioneer dehp7800mp from circuit city for less than $370 price matched to hhgregg. Its amazing. You can download new movies/screensaves.images and upload them to the unit via a CD-r. Its amazing. Jessica Biel is smokin hot on my HU
Great HU in my opinion. I think its pretty easy o navigate, but then again I had a alpine 9831 before this, and it was a ***** to change eq settings.
