Subwoofers and accessing the spare tire.. and other questions..

Ok, this is a real dilemma.. in my past cars. This trunk has less space then my other cars have, and the smallest box I got I doubt will slide back enough to make a solution easy. It is for this reason, and that I need a 4channel amp, that I have yet to install it..

In the past, I have heard of people cutting the spare tire cover(the hard surface) and installing some sort of hinge to make it easier to access.
(btw.. the word hinge looks a little off, and I was going to say hinging, which is the correct spelling, but wow, it looks foreign..)
What I wonder is if anyone has any ideas, or has done anything to make it easier to access?

Another thing I have done in my last install, which I regret, was mounting the subwoofer box to the floor. First, drilling holes into the box for the mount, well, it can't be good for the box unless the screws are shorter than the thickness of the box.. second, it didn't work out all that well... and lastly, it looked like garbage! So any clues?..

My only working idea is to maybe put velcro on the bottom of the box, making it easier to remove, to access the spare.. and hopefully holding it still, though I am not sure how effective that would be..

My box, with speaker.. weighs alot. So any idea on how I can secure it, and access the spare would be nice..

Oh... and I sure would love to see where people mounted their amps, capacitors, ect.. I will start scanning these forums, but I NEED this install to look as good as the car!

here's what i did in my accord at the time. though they do have a lil bigger trunk.

netzyo93's 1993 Honda Accord on CarDomain - Page 5

I just raised the floor about 2 inches so that a full size spare would fit. Made it a little raised around where the box would go, that way it doesn't move around. Its heavy so it won't move around too much. Mounted one amp to the side. And the other amp was in between the box and rear seat, but not mounted to either. It had its own stand

and and the middle has a small handle. So you can pull it up to access the spare.

I am really interested in what you did. What kind of wood did you use? Is it covered in vinyl? I wouldn't know how to make it look that good, but that is basically what I am shooting for, almost exactly. I want access to spare, a way to keep sub box from sliding too easily. And what was the spray you used? Do you have any closer pics that show how you access your spare, or any of the process of creating it? Was it one solid piece or did you build it in the trunk. Tons of questions. Wish mine looked like that.

I was looking at your pics of what you did with your prelude, I would love more info of how you did it!

Also, looking at your pictures I am confused how you installed those subs in that small amount of space! They are 12 inch subs right? And your seat is still up? I have been in my trunk all day just trying to get some stuff wired up, and either your box is very narrow, or you have a different trunk then I do!

Also, for anyone else, I am interested in buying a 4 channel amp, as cheap as possible as I am broke! But if you may have one your willing to part with, here is the Thread!

If you have alot of patience, and a good firm grasp on logic, you could give this a shot:

How to Make a Fiberglass Enclosure

I'm in the process of tucking 2 10" subs up under the rear deck, in a hanging-type design; but I got as far as creating the mold before I had to put the project on pause for a deployment =(

However, in a 5th gen, there are no "good" spots to mount anything to the bottom of the trunk, without it hindering spare tire access.

Personally, I did away with the spare tire... I just tell everyone that I have special tires that are programmed to not go flat. Realistically, I have progressive roadside coverage =D

But, if you want a box that stays put, your only real choice is a custom box... and the best method is fiberglass. It can come out really nice.. and if it does, you have something new to bragg about (look what I can do!)

V/r,
Mike
