Stock radio not so great?

I just got a 97 Prelude and have to admit the stock radio is pretty bad. I am no an audiophile, just listen to classic rock. The stock system seems to be all about panel booming base and ear bleeding treble with nothing in between. Is this just a matter of it's age and would a new radio solve the problem?

An aftermarket headunit would be the first step in solving your problem. Definitely

and I AM an audiophile

Speakers are 13 years old and I bet a bit dried out.

Both responses are very valid. If you need something more it is probably time to upgrade the head-unit and front stage.

The stock speakers are made of paper. They are also almost 14 years old. If they aren't blown already, I'd give them about five minutes with a new HU before they crap out. So like Solid said, replace both or replace neither.

I think it would be fun to put in a new HU, and take off the speaker covers, and just WATCH the new unit blow up / disintegrate the speakers! hahaha

No big deal

Watching speakers blow is for sissys. I play with Fiats and having your suspension mounting points pull out due to rust while flying around an entrance ramp is much more fun.
