Ive heard rumors that some of the hondas come equiped with remote locks through the stereo and all you need to do is buy a remote and program it. Is this true for a 96 civic LX. Please either respond here or to my email
Adam381630@aol.com. Thanks

I think you are talking about the factory keyless entry system, I heard that 96+ Civic the unit was built into the headunit.

the lx has the same plugs and the antenna on the radio as the ex(which comes with the keyless). never tried but it seems to be the same radio, might be worth $20-30 to see, if that's what you want.

Is there anyway to have keyless without the factory stereo. Seems like there should be but I want to know before I buy the remote. I dont intend on having the factory face for a long time.

no.. your best bet is do maybe just get something like a dei keyless entry system but id recomend just buying an alarm.. its your best bet and will unlock and lock the doors with the remote.. if your gonna spend the 30 just save till about 200 or so buy get something like a viper 300..

my local audio shop told me that they have a harness they can use to keep the factory head unit in the car so that the keyless entry can be retained while replacing the head unit with an aftermarket one, but u do need to keep the factory head unit somewhere in the car

since you have a lx, don't you need to buy the "security" unit first (along with the transmitter) to obtain keyless entry??? ex's have this ability because it comes with both units standard. if you take a look at www.hparts.com under accessories (for your model), you can buy both pieces for about 200 bucks. it says you can only buy the transmitter if you have the security module.

omg.. ok dont listen to me.. yes the deck has to stay in the car.. but why get a keyless entry?? if your going to get something get a full alarm system to protect your car.. why would you pay 200 dollars for a keyless entry system that locks and unlocks your doors.. kinda stupid to me.. buy an alarm.. PROTECT your car..

personally, i agree with you loudsystem...the factory security is lame and it's not worth upgrading to it just to get keyless entry. but i was just resonding to the guy's question with what i thought the answer was. it's up to him to figure out what to do.

to digress, someone on this board promotes www.autotoys.com a lot and i believe he said they have a solution for the keyless entry problem found on the 96-98 civics. i believe they sell a harness that does away with the factory radio because it makes the connection between the 2 key wires within the wire harness for the keyless entry to function.

Its not that I dont think an alarm is a good idea its the fact that I would rather not spend $200 if I could get away with just like 20 or 60. Thanks for all the help.

how would an alarm system not be good
??? my friends civic si had one of those lovely factoy pos alarms. well IT GOT STOLEN.. but if you only want to spend that much just find a dei keyless entry some of them have starter kill and should be around 100 bucks..

you can get the dome light to work by connecting 2 wires, no need to buy a harness for that. If you have factory keyless then you get a t-harness and the radio goes below were it sits in the dash. If all you want is keyless I can't think a a good reason not get the factory as long as all you need is a remote, but if it's going to be $100 or more you'd be much smarter getting an aftermarket peice, such as DEI's keyless or alarm.
