question about wiring dual coil subwoofer

i bought a infinity perfect sub a while back...when hooking it up it i only hooked up one coil (i'm guessing the main coil) up to the amp because i didnt think my amp at the time could handle a dual coil setup...

now i was thinking about upgrading my amp...how would i connect the second coil? would i do it in series (2nd coil connects to main coil which connects to amp) or is it better to connect it paralell (both coils connect directly to amp)...

i know how to wire stuff up good but i never was quite sure how dual coil works and how it hooks up...

so any information and advice would be greatly appreciated..

pretend you have two seperate subwoofers...

would your amp handle two subs? if so, it'll handle two coils...

is 2 or more channel amplifier or a mono amplifier? if it's mono, you'll probably be safe wiring it in parallel, if it's a 2 channel, might as well wire it in stereo, where the amp sees one coil per channel, rather than bridging the amp...

pretty pictures to explain

All merlindavis told is scrap he dont know how to match impedance

It depend how many ohms per coil and the load your amp can handle

If you have 2 x 4 ohm and you plug in parallel you will have 2 ohm load total

2 x 8 in parallel = 4 ohm load

2 x 2 in parallel = 1 ohm load (be carefull close to be a short)

2 x 2 ohm serie = 4 ohm load

Do not pretend you have 2 sub only 1 sub but with 2 load mode

just told me how many ohm per coil you have and i tell you the good wiring

When you dont know you dont reply

way to make an assumption...

most mono amplifiers can handle a bit more of a load than a multiple channel amp, so the ability to wire in parallel is a safe bet... unless his amplifier is utter crap, it probably won't complain much to see a 2 ohm load...

if i had said anything regarding the resistance of the subs or what the amp can handle, then you can call me on it... show me a DVC Infinity perfect sub that had 2 ohm coils, i can't seem to find any, so i'm pretty sure he has 4 ohm coils...

and for simplicity, he might as well pretend he has two seperate subs, as the amplifier is going to see the load exactly the same on a DVC as it would on two single coils... it doesn't care where the coils are, all it sees is two coils...

i know just fine

Actually it doesnt see any coils. It sees the ohm load, which yes, can be described as two single voice coil subs. Im not sure what the link shows above but to learn how to wire the sub up check out JLaudio.com. I think they still have stuff up. Also thats very bad for your sub that you only hooked 1 coil up. You could blow the sub like that. Also you might not need a new amp, check the wiring and check to see what the amp can hold (ohm load). Tell us exactly what amp and what sub and we can tell you what to do.

Lets assume its a dual 4 ohm :
Take one + to the other and then from there to the amp. Then do the same thing for the -. This should yield you a 2 ohm load.

Take the + from one side take it to the amp, take the - from the other side and take it to the amp. Run one wire from the remaining + to the remaining -. This will yield you an 8 ohm load.

The 8 ohm load is going to be very quiet. Its going to be less loud then what you have now, Im thinking you have it hooked up as a 4 ohm load to the amp, because that would be one coil. The amp might be able to handle the 2 ohm load and it will be a lot louder. However, you take the chance of overheating the amp. It will get very hot very fast if it is not 2 ohm stable. If its not a higher quality amp it could fry.

Give me some model numbers and who makes the amp.
