I'm pretty sure you can find head units like that for <$200, but probably not Alpine. Speakers will depend entirely on brand, quality, components... prices on them have not changed much in 5 years or what makes drivers good/bad. Same for subs. Amps I think have improved, but again, you'll be looking at the same ballpark as you would back then, price-wise.
Could be done for $600 on mid-range components.
All this is for pricing in the US, mind you...
If you are like me, you may be perfectly happy running 5-year old components. Or 10 year old. I'm still using an amp in my truck that's almost 20 years old now (actually made by Crutchfield, they had their own line for a few years 87 or 88-91 or 92). If that's the case, I HIGHLY suggest looking at ebay. You can get 5-10 year old components dirt cheap. Speakers/subs might be a little risky, but I've done well outfitting some cars there so far. I've also managed to find new (refurbished) 10 disc Sony MP3 changes for <$150 shipped from reputable sources.

Alpine 9856: $180 in Chinatown
Assassin sub, 10": $70
Used Alpine 4ch amp: $100
Polk SR 6.5" Components: $free
========================
Grand total: $350
So since you need some speakers, like Todd said, you can get this done for under $600 USD.

I work at best buy, so I think I can help give you an idea of prices. For the head unit, JVC just came out with a head unit that comes with the IPOD cable built in. The unit costs just about $140. For 6.5" speakers, you can pick up pioneers for around $55, which are okay, I guess. But you can get a decently good set of components for $200-300, or decently good coaxials for $100-175.
Here is where you have some choices. You can buy a 4 channel amp to run the 6.5" speakers and one 10" sub. Like it was said above, ebay might be the way to go for an amp, otherwise you can get an alpine 4 channel for about $300 new. Which would give you just enough power to run a decent 10" sub.
Another option is to run the front pair directly off of the deck, and run something like the Infinity Basslink. It is a 200W rms sub/amp enclosure, with a servo actuated passive woofer to aid in sound production. It's main selling point is that it is produces good sound from a very small package, which might be perfect for your little MR2. They retail for $300 at Best Buy in the states here.
