Picked up a Pioneer AVIC F90BT double din... can anyone recommend a good dash kit?

Hey guys, looking for as clean an install as possible. Can anyone recommend a good dash kit? If available I'd even prefer a glossy finish to match the bezel of the unit and the oem carbon fiber trim kit.

This dash kit look like it would fit? Metra 99-7801: In-dash Receiver Kit - Additional images and video

Dude, not to rain on your parade, but i've had this installed for ~1.5 months. Needless to say i'm taking it out and exchanging it for the Kenwood DNX8120. In case you haven't seen all the problems the F-series is having, go to AVIC411.com

You should be able to 'iso-mount' this using the factory brackets that support/mount your factory radio and pocket. It should come with a 'trim-ring' that might fill any gaps pretty well, or it might not. Give it a whirl and you'll know if you'll need a dash kit.

thanks guys--

rayslude, have been following AVIC411 since before the F90BT came out and am aware of all the issues. It seems the firmware update as helped with some of the major issues making the unit actually usable now. Have you tried the firmware update? If so, still find it unusable?

BBY, didn't come with a trim ring, so would still like to know what dash kit would work best. Shouldn't the same dash kit be used on the Prelude for any double din installation? What have people here been using?

I'm not sure what kits others have used; they might not have used a kit at all w/ iso-mounting available. There are a few brands of dash kits that I would consider when doing an install: Metra, Scosche, and American International (AI). Here's the link to the Metra site, Metra Electronics - Products. The kit I would purchase (mind that you can't purchase from the Metra site) is the 99-7801. You may even still need a trim ring to make it look finished. I've never installed a double din into a prelude. I've installed numerous double-din units and they almost always come with a trim ring. This is the extent of my knowledge.

thanks BBY, appreciate your help... the crutchfield link in my original post acually is the 99-7801. Can anyone else who has done an actual double din install confirm that this kit would work?

Actually, to clarify, I think a double din should just slide right in to the stock space and bolt right up, right? In this case all I woud need from the dash kit is the trim ring.

BBY, in the metra kit is that not a trim ring pictured, or are you saying I need a trim ring in addition to what the kit provides?

Yeah that looks to be a trim ring. I suppose you're right. However, some double-din units come with a metal cage that has to be installed into the dash kit, which then the radio would slide into and mount flush with the kit/cage. In installations like these, a trim ring would be needed, as you would likely see the outer lip of the metal cage. If your unit does not have a metal cage in which it needs to slide into, or it can be installed w/o the cage using the provided brackets in the kit, you shouldn't need a trim ring, and it would look like the trim ring provided in the metra kit would work fine.

i have done the firmware update and by my personal experience, it made it worse.

I called pioneer last week expressing all my problems and they told me that they were supposed to be that way. I went from a Z2 to the F90BT and asked him why the F didn't have alot of the features the F has. He said the F is an economy unit so I questioned why their "flagship" unit had a lower resolution and a less desireable UI. After I got so disgusted with the Pioneer rep I told him I was taking it back and getting the Kenwood. To my surprise he said, "Fine by me." WTF? Great customer service.

Personally, if you spend this much on a navi system, it should work perfectly right out of the box. In my opinion, these were beta units they rushed to get out to meet their deadlines.

Forgive my noobness and sorry if this is a dumb (and thread hi-jacking) question, but do these types of head units come with faces that come on and off? I'd really like to install perhaps the Kenwood DNX8120 somewhere down the line, but I'd be concerned with it making my car a hot target to break into. Can you take off the face and stow it away somewhere?

I know I'm bumping an old thread but I searched and couldn't find any info on doing an "iso-mount" install on my double din headunit. If anyone has any pictures of what's needed or a write-up on how its done, let me know. Thanks in advance
