I bought 2 JL W6's off someone and how do I tell they are blown? I heard there is a way to check it with a 9 VOLT battery? How do you do this?

Thanks~

There's no way to realistically evaluate the speaker off of a 9 volt battery to check if it is blown.

You can "pop test" the speaker (make the voice coil move) by connecting it to the battery for one charge. Positive to positive, negative to negative, all it takes is a wire. This test only shows that the voice coil still functions, but cannot reveal if it is blown or fuctioning properly. This test will only make the cone excurt or invert itself.

The only true way to test a speaker is to play it. Hook it up to your home system and listen to how it plays musically. Or test them in a friend' car, or take them to a shop to test. If it plays without distortion, then the speaker should be fine.

But remember if it does distort at high volume, it could be because youre testing it outside of a proper enclosure. You dont necessarily have to crank it to test a speaker. Just see if it plays musically at a normal volume.

another way is to meter the speaker. Get a DVM, and check if the subs are still the ohms that they claim. IE, make sure that all the voice coils still have 6 ohms of resistance in them. Do not have them connected to anything when you do this. It will not be exact, but close (5.8-6.2 ohms, for example) anything different means the coil could be in bad shape. No resistance at all is an open coil

1) DC resistance check with a ohmmeter to check for continuity
2)push down on the cone of the woofer and listen for scratching noises. If you hear anything scratching or rubbing, the coils are probably all chared and or unravelled.
3)find someone or a shop with an oscillator to perform a sine wave sweep.
4)listen to it and if its farting, then it is blown.
