How to install Radar detector hardire kit

hey guys, i've searched the forums and found some tutorials/DIY on installing the hardwire kit for radar detectors but none specifically for the prelude.

I have the hardwire kit that comes with the mute button. It comes with everything including the little plastic wire splicer thing.

I need to know where I should ground the grounding wire and where to plug in the "red" wire. If anybody can post pictures of their set-up, that would be great! thanks for any help.

I take it you got an Escort? I am headed out to the garage right now at 12:01am to take the car cover off and snap some pics to post up. I believe I have the cleanest install of one of these units period. I'll get the pics up for you to make the call on that though.

On grounding the unit just look for any place that looks to be a good connection.

For the power, I hooked mine to the power for the radio. That way it shuts off with the key. Also rather easy to get to. I have done that on 6 different Honda's I have owned and one friends Denali.

Here are a couple pics as teasers of what I did. Maybe you can figure it out.

Pic of the Lude on in the making.

Bad pic of friends Denali that we did.

Be back shortly with finished pics of the Lude.

Alright here ya go. If ya got any questions just ask. My friend and I have done custom installs of these things on a few different vehicles actually.

Now remember I snapped these quick here tonight. I threw the Radar up for ya in the second pics just for the pics sake.

nice man, that looks very nice where you put the mute control.

What I was asking was what wires to connect to?

I searched and found this,

HONDA/ACURA
P o w e r
Memory (+12v Constant) Blue/White
Ignition (+12v Switched) Yellow/Red
Ground (-) Black
Illumination Red/Black
Dimmer (none)
Power Antenna Yellow/White

I'm told to connect the "red" wire into the Ignition wires (red or yellow). Is this correct? Just any red or yellow wire would suffice?
and for grounding, I just wire to any bolt where black wires are connected to?

This is basically what I'm asking. Please confirm if I'm correct, thanks!

corpus: You can also plug the red wire into the fuse box. That way your not splicing into anything that is using power. You need a female style connector I believe and there will be some blank accessory power sources.

Red I believe on the back of the Radio. That way it will shut off with the ignition switch. Also easier get to the the ones in the switch itself.

Ground wire to any nut/bolt under the dash that connects to the main body of the car. Clean of paint is always good.

Also if ya read my 1st post I did say where to hook the wires even before I posted the pics.

Can someone confirm that if I find a yellow or red (ignition wires) wire under the dash, I can use it to plug in the red wire? Thanks for any help. I am assuming the power wire behind the radio is probably yellow/red and connects to the red/yellow under the dash as well as the ignition wire? I hope this makes sense, thanks for any help. I just dont wanna mess anything up, lol.

^ Ignition or radio "hot" wire will work or you can always hook it straight into the fuse box and not have any splicing.

red/yellow should be read, "red wire with yellow tracer." If I'm not mistaken, the wire colors that you posted are for the factory radio. You can't go and find any red/yellow wire and assume it's ignition. Did you buy the escort hardwire kit? If so, you should only have to hook up two wires. Ignition and ground. You can get ignition from the fuse-box if you find that easier. If you do not have a multimeter to test with, I suggest finding the windshield wiper fuse and using a fuse-tap to get power from that circuit. Ground, like stated above, can be any piece of body metal, some dash support pieces, existing ground connections, firewall, etc.

btw. I mounted my escort kit under the radio in the single din pocket. I used 3M tape to attach it to the top of the pocket. It doesn't look as clean as Honda4life's but it's right there at a finger's reach when my hand is on the shifter. Very convenient.

IT'S NOT under the dash. He is talking about the wiring for the radio. YOU CAN FIND those wire there MUCH easier. POP off the radio bezel, unscrew 4 screws. YOU NOW have access to the back of the radio.
Good luck

p.s. This is also what I did in my prelude and it worked BEAUTIFULLY

how does this work?

I just got a ticket this weekend-- ****ing laser. Ever since I've gotten my escort 8500 4 years ago I've gotten 2 tickets BOTH because of a laser gun.

I know one solution is to not speed, but if any of you have ever driven on the florida turnpike for 4 hours the way I have (fort lauderdale to gainesville) you know its impossible to stay at 70 without losing ur friggin mind.

I really wanan start doign some research on laser jamemrs. Do they work? what is the legality of it? If it is illegal, can they catch you, like is it easy enough for them to look at the car to see it?/?

I updated to the M-45 already. They are illegal in many states including the one I live in. When they go off, SLOW DOWN and shut the jammer off. Hopefully when they take the second reading your within the posted speed limit and with the jammer off the will get a speed but not know what just happened.

There is no fool proof way of speeding. You can only really do it at your own risk and pay the tickets as the come in.

I had the hard wire kit with the remote mute button that comes in their little black box.

Amazon.com: Escort Direct Wire SmartCord for Radar and Laser Detectors: Electronics

I have a few extra coiled cords around with the mute buttons so I tore one apart for the test fitting. Next popped the dummy plug out and did some cutting on the back side to fit the circuit board with the lights and buttin in from the back. Drilled the 3 holes in the front side. (Refer to pic of it sitting on the rim.)

When it fit just right, took the one apart in the car and hot glued it in place on the back side, slapped the sticker on the front and popped the plug back into place next to the fog switch.

Have done this to a couple vehicles and it works and looks good IMOP.
