I was told by the salesperson at a car audio store to ground the amp wire directly to the battery. He also said to keep the power and ground wires taped together side by side but not electrically connected. Is this good advice?

Considering how many people frame ground amps with good results (which probably describes everyone on this board) I'd ignore the salesman. He's probably trying to sell you more $4/ft wire. If you you want to get the benefit of "common grounding" ground your deck to the same point as the amps. Oh yeah, his later point goes without saying. Touch the two power wires together for an instant and it's sparks city!

I wouldn't buy from the a-hole who told you that. No more than 18 inches from the amp is the standard recommendation.

Yup....I agree, infact I do not think you would want to run your power and ground right next to each other either....
