FYI: Dynamat

I'm creating this post so that my for sale post doesn't have to be continously filled with questions regarding Dynamat. The post is located here.

For those who don't know Dynamat is a product that claims to reduce rattling noises and increase your dB. I agree with their claims, but their products cost FAR TOO MUCH. Since Dynamat is only composed of an asphault sheet with their logo stamped upon the back. Other products (McMasterCarr's hi-temp mastic) are the same exact thing as Dynamat Original w/o the logo and costs more than 14.5 times less than Dynamat Original.

The pricing is as follows:

Dynamat Extreme: $6.95 per sq. ft.
Dynamat Orignal: $15.28 per sq. ft.
Hi-Temp Mastic (dynamat orignal w/o logo): $1.03 per sq. ft. (I messed up on that calculation on the other page)

I based those prices off the "bulk" versions of Dynamat. Extreme comes with 36 sq ft and the Orginal comes in a 13.09 sq ft per package which probally has something to do with it.

As for Dynamat costing so much they've been the "leader" of the dampening industry for years. By leader I mean they're the ones that push their product the most and essentially give HUGE bonuses to those shops that will carry exclusively Dynamat. Just look at retail pricing the Hi-Temp Mastic and Dynamat Original from a consumer standpoint which is the pricing I'm giving you.

As for the "extreme" version of Dynamat I can only guess it's even a thinner asphault sheet but it has an aluminum backing (*read* ooOOooooOOOOO, pretty!). This will most likely only be good for very small vibrations since it doesn't add that much mass to the vibrating surfaces since as I said in the other post is the greater mass requires more energy to vibrate so when you reduce that mass, you lower the amount of energy needed to vibrate that mass.

But in the end it's your money and your choice.

*ODL: Sorry for posting this all here, I just wanted to get it out of my for sale post*

~Doug
