You need the 555D for Preludes. 555I is for civics & rsx's. 555H is for other hondas.
Why does the prelude use a different one?? Can i buy the 555i or 555h? and just connect the wires differently? (i can get 555i or 555h easily, and 555d is harder/more expensive for me to get)

Honestly, I don't know why. DEI makes the D specifically for the Preludes, and excludes the Prelude from the list of cars the H is compatable with. I supposed you could give it a try, using the H. I personally haven't tried it on a Prelude though. The only two bypass interfaces that DEI lists for Preludes are the D (keyless) and the U (universal, leave key in the interface) Why is the D more expensive and harder to get? Look, I'll even give you a site/store to order it from. The 555H & 555D are both $29, and the shop is in Dublin, about 90 miles from you. (so shipping should be quick, if you decide to have it shipped) And, if you know anyone that goes to OSU, they get a 10% discount at the shop.
You definately need the 555D. I believe the prelude has different wiring for their immobiliser system. Even CODE ALARM bypass modules (are usually better than DEI's) have a different part for 5th gen prelude specific systems.
I personally have the 555D and it is not that great. For some reason, it would loose the memory on the unit after about a week or 2 and i would have to reprogram it. It only takes about a minute to program but its just the hassle. I have been reading up on the issue, and it seems many of the bypass modules DEI makes (almost ALL the 555Ds) as well have problems with keeping memory.
I have had the greatest experience with Code Alarm products as I use to work at CC and they carried them. Never seem to have a problem with holding a memory and they worked. Though, I did choose DEI because I believed they would have a better product, but their bypasses are just not up to par.
I have used 555h, 555d and I have to say i reccomend neither. The 556U is the best thing available. Always works, never fails. the 555h and 555d drop codes, and need to be reprogrammed at times. The 555H can be used on th 1998 prelude only i believe, i may be mistaken, but in general the 555h will not work on preludes, thi sis why they make the d. In either case the 556U (Universal) definitely works better. Its easier to install too. The only drawback, is you have to give up a key.
i dont mind giving up a key. As long as it works reliably. Will this work on a prelude since it takes a very specific one? I normally do not buy hings labeled "universal". You can pretty much assure me that this will work?
Thanks much for the info!!! Anyone else use the 556u? I can get this one from my truck next day (aka in stock in warehouse) for $15.20. Not too shabby if it works
Yes, this unit works on any car with a transponder. Basically all it does is act like an antenna to send the RF signal from the key (which you place inside the 556U), to the key cylinder. This is what was used before vehicle specific modules were available. I have been doing remote starts for a long time. This is the absolute best choice for security bypass.
