Can tweeters be a good center speaker?

My system allows me to add a center speaker, but i'm not sure where to mount it in my 5th gen. I have two 4" MB Quart's and was thinking of the area right above the clock, but there isn't enough mounting depth for regular speakers. It looks like the only thing i have a chance of fitting in that area would be tweeters. Can tweeters handle center channel frequencies, or is it necessary to use a woofer? This is for producing Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.

There's no way a tweeter will be adequate for this application.

Yeah...i kinda thought that tweeters wouldn't be enough. Most home systems at least have a 4" for the center. Anyways i was able to put in a 4" inside the center console in between the shifter and the radio housing. The sound is a little muffled, but i just boosted the volume level for that channel.

center channels are used to recreate voices and other sounds that are created in the center of the soundstage. since most people don't have voices that are >3.5khz, tweeters are no good. Human voice ranges around 1khz. You would have to use midranges for center channel. You can throw a tweeter in there if you want, but it wont be used that much. As for DD5.1 in a car, it's probably going to be very hard to get the soundstage perfect becuase of the small space and all.

If you are competing, you should mate one of those four inchers with a tweeter. I am not sure on your application, but in many cases you can remove the dash, and mount the speaker behind your defroster grill by the winshield, and there you have your sleek yet functional center channel.

Yeah...I really wanted to mount the 4" in the area right above the clock, but if you open up that area there is a plastic frame like thingy blocking any chances of putting a speaker there. I'm not sure what that plastic thing is covering...any of you know if I can just cut it out? Oh yeah and it's in a 5th gen.
