Can I run a sub with my stock head unit?

Iv never realy been a fan of systems but I think i would like to throw a 10 or a 12 in my car, but i dont want to get an aftermarket deck. Is it possible to run a sub from my stock unit. 98 base.

Yes, you need a Line Output Converter, or 'LOC' as the industry calls it. It ties in to your speaker wires. You can access them behind the radio or under the rear decklid. Should run you $25.

Will running one of these Line Output Converters interfere with my speakers? Ill have to run an amp for the sub so equalizing the thing wont be possible from my stock head unit. I dont want to mess up my speakers. Would it just be easier to grab a deck or will this be fine? Thanks again Mike

No, it wont affect your speakers at all. But any adjustment that you do to the speakers with your HU will also affect the signal going to the amp off of the LOC. I would always recommend getting an aftermarket deck over stock, unless you want to stay stock for security/looks reasons. Reason being is you'll get much more control over your total system, and wiring is cleaner (no tapping into wires, just using harnesses). If you want to keep your stock HU and use the LOC, try to find an amp for your sub that has a remote bass knob. It's a little box with a knob that lets you adjust the level of the sub amp on the fly. Not all amps come with those though.

another reason to run an aftermarket HU is because the LOC will take an amplified signal, drop it down to line level, then your amplifier will amplify that signal. If your signal source or stock HU has any type of distortion or poor quality to it, it will be amplified exponentially. For a sub this won't be a big issue, but it's a good reason to get an aftermarket HU, on top of what ExodusFX said. an aftermarket deck in the lude should look nice too.

If you're worried about it getting stolen, iso-mount it to the factory brackets. Simply having the radio keys won't do a thing for the thief, as they would need a phillips screw driver. Most thiefs won't expect it, well I should say the ones who tried to get my alpine didn't. Out of frustration they busted up the HVAC controls though. Maybe i would've been better off letting them have it

^^^ You're usually better off if they can just grab it and go. The theifs here have no problems with smashing your dash and ripping your seats if they get frustrated.

Anyways, always take your detachable face with you, people!!
