i have ONE type r that i recently purchased...
currently breaking in right now...but i cant help resisting turning it up...
well its powered by a jbl bp600.1 amp
and i took it to our little mini meet before we headed upto importeurasia
some guys that didnt drive preludes, (bmw's, lexus)
checked ma system out and they said the subs have a really clean hard hitting bass to it, no distortion, and for one sub..they really thump
the type-r's are supposed to sound similar to the w6's, meaning they hit hard and clear. I have owned plenty of w6's, and if that was true the alpine's are about $100 less, so I wouldn't even bother with the type-s, since they are the lower model anyways.
the reason i decided to get the type r's was because they are surprising cheaper then other sub in it's class
and everyone recommended me the type r for clean hitting bass on www.caraudio.com

They are designed for different applications. One is geared more towards SPL, the other towards SQ. . .I just cant remember which one is which. Both speakers come in DVC versions, but I think they have different ohm ratings between the two series.
I have only owned the w6's, they are dual 3 ohm voice coils, and they make awesome Db, I got 142 in my civic with a alpine 1507 amp and 2 12w6's, but their sq is pretty good, I don't think I've heard the w3's, but I always thought they were a lower end version of the w6
