hey guys, my friend wants to sell me his new alpine components since they somehow dont fit his car for some reason...but it was suppose to. well they are these right here : http://cgi.ebay.com/2-ALPINE-SPR-17L...QQcmdZViewItem
does anybody have any reviews or knowledge of these components? will an amp with 300/4 be succifient for the speakers and probably 2 coax's in the back? thanks!
I don't think those will fit in the front doors of a 5gen. Check the top mounting depth on those, as my infinity reference components have a 2" mounting depth, which barely fit with careful spacing.
also is that 300Wx4 is a BIG 4ch amp even if it is 300Wpeak x 4. Are you sure it's not 300W rms or peak TOTAL?
hmm, im hoping its not too big for the 5th gen. My friend bought these and said it wouldn't fit his Tundra so he wants to sell them to me if they fit :/
I put a set of Polk dB6500 in my 5th gen. They have a top mount depth of around 2" (IIRC). I still had to cut a bit off of the basket behind the woofer in the door panel, but you pretty much have to with any speakers. The shallower the woofer, the better. Crutchfield had a sale on these when I bought them, they might still be on sale.
lets say I find a good pair of components that would fit my car. Will it be okay to just run those off the aftermarket HU? Or would it be best to attach an amp to them? Thanks.
You can use the HU, but it might not provide much power. What is the power rating in RMS of your headunit? If that's the route you plan to take, get some sensitive speakers. My Polks have around 93dB sensitivity IIRC, which is typical and is OK if you use an amp or HU with low power. You won't get alot of volume, but it's decent. Any lower and you need a good amp in my opinion. I'm running a hi-power HU from Panasonic and it works well. It's difficult because you need a speaker with good sensitivity that fits the door panels. Also, remember that a difference of 1dB is huge. A difference of 3dB is basically half (-3dB) or double (+3dB) the output in sound pressure level *I think*.

almost right, a difference of 3db is achieved by halving or doubling the power provided to the speakers. Sensitivity is a measure of sound pressure taken at one meter from a speaker provided with one watt of power. This is why sensitivity should always be taken into consideration, as a speaker with a 90dB sensitivity rating will need twice the amount of wattage to play as loud a 93dB speaker.
dB is the measurement for sound pressure, so think of how much power you'd need to double your sound pressure from where most h/u are at now (20-25W rms)

Right, I was tired and didn't want to get all technical (plus my memory fails me sometimes ). Thanks for clearing it up!
i'm not sure what to look at other than it saying its 6.5" so i assume it'll fit....i guess i was wrong since i was wrong about the alpine ones i first posted about ^^.
Top mount depth is 2.7". Those will be too deep to fit. You'll have to completely remove the speaker baffling that's in the door panel and the speaker will probably still touch something, like the window guide. You need a speaker with around 2" top mount depth. Just by looking at the photo I can tell they won't fit.
Look at these, this is what I bought (by recommendation on other sites) and made work with a little modification to the door panel and stock tweeter brackets...wish I took pics of the install. But I can explain how I did it.
Whoa, they have a good deal on Outlet and Scratch and Dents....they offer the same warranty as new when you buy that way. I bought my Panasonic head unit as an Outlet item and had no problems whatsoever.
Yes, top mount depths no more than 2" is ideal for minimal cutting of the baffle and no interference with the window guide.
Those are the replacements for the dB 6500 *I think*. It looks like the dimensions are the same or very similar to the dB 6500, so I think they will work just as well. I would recommend getting them from Crutchfield because of their warranty and technical help. They are awesome to deal with, worth the extra money.
