So, my Porsche and prelude were broken into last night, in my driveway with me awake!! Neither car had an alarm. Are alarms worth the money? are they more of a hassle than they are worth? I mean, if someone is going to steal something, they are going to steal it regardless of any alarms right?

Sucks to hear about your car man. Last night a couple kids were lifting stuff from unlocked cars in mine and surrounding neighborhoods. Idiots left a trail in the fresh snow, so I hope they got caugth
I think there was a thread similar to this recently. But anywho, I like alarms, so I'll talk about 'em some more . I say that they certainly are worth it. I have a Viper 5900 (2-way, 1mile range, r/s) that I love. Although, it doesn't really ever get 1 mile of range, the half-mile that I have seen is range enough for me. I most value the idea of being alerted to alarm intrusions and warn-aways via the key-faub. The faub even shows what sensor was triggered. The faub can be set to audible alert, or vibrate alert, which is nice. Retail, it'll cost $500 installed. I opted to install a motion sensor, and extra sirens w/ a backup battery. It's loud enough where I can hear it clear as day over a quarter mile away. I used to have numerous 'mini-piezo' sirens inside the car, so if someone did get inside, it'd be unbearably loud. If you did the 5900 w/battery backup external siren, 4 mini-piezo sirens inside, and motion sensor, you'd be at about $825 installed at Best Buy (where I sit as I type this).
Alarms attract attention which is what you want if someone is jacking your stuff. Because you stated you were awake, if you had an alarm, you could have reacted to it and then catch the thieves in action.
They don't do much if they take the car though. LoJack would be better for that.

My 4th gen got taken from my apartment complex when I lived in Orange County.. luckily and I didn't know it at the time but my car had Lo-Jack and they found it a couple towns down in Pomona.. They took my wiper blades, optima battery, quarters from my change dish and crashed the car.. thanks!
I'm looking at getting something for my 5th gren that shows warning off someone touching the car.
ive had an alarm on my 5th G for almost a year now and would say its worth it. the last thing a thief would want is to get caught, so the last car they would break into is one that would risk getting them caught. most alarms have a blinking red indicator inside the car, and that alone is usually enough to discourage the bads guys.
in the end, it doesnt make your car invincible, but most people are looking to take your stereo or speakers, not the entire car
