99 Prelude Speaker System Question

Hey guys, I'm new here to the forums but have been following for quite some time now...but anyways I'm thinking about replacing my head unit in my lude to an aftermarket head unit that puts out 52w x 4, but i understand the acoustic feedback system is the stock so my question is...if I replace the head unit will it make the quality better or just distort the sound since the head unit puts out more power than the stock speakers can probably handle?

The stock system sounds pretty crisp already but I want to use my ipod instead of CD's..and I'm not planning on replacing the stock speakers since they still sound good.

Any help would be appreciated thanks!

If you hook up an aftermarket HU, you will have to buy new speakers. The old ones will likely blow shortly after the install due to the slightly higher power output of aftermarket HU's (if they aren't blown already and you just don't know it yet) . They are, after all, 10 years old and constructed of paper and foam. Long story short, if you're not going to bother with replacing the speakers then you should probably just leave the stock radio in as well.

But isn't there a way where I wouldn't have to get new rear speakers? I think I read a thread where someone was able to run the wire from the AFBS amp box all the way to the aftermarket head unit and everything worked just fine. I just need step by step instructions on how this is all done

I didn't say it wasn't possible, I stated why its not a good idea. If you install an aftermarket radio you must wire around the AFBS, since it won't work with the new head unit. When you do that, you will be hooking up the new HU (designed for 4ohm load) to the stock rear speakers (2 ohm load) which will: 1) sound distorted and unclear, and 2) eventually blow your speakers.

If you insist on doing it here is the link for the work around:

bypassing AFBS system (5th gen)

Note that in the writeup it even says to run aftermarket speakers
