6x9 aftermarket mounting depth?

Can anyone recommend the max mounting depth to look for that will fit in the rear 6x9 speakers of the 'Lude? I heard some folks using some XTC foam surround to lift some of the speaks up. I like the MB Quart DKD 169 2-way speaks that are quoted at 2.83" top mount. I figure the 2 ways won't yield that tinny upper range of many 3-way 6x9 speaks.

I also see the MTX audio amp line has SmartEngage which uses the speaker level inputs (if you use those instead of preamp level) as a remote turn on. No need to run a line for that. Sounds good, but I'd rather use preamp level to send to the rears. Whatcha think?

Thanks

On my 00 lude, there isn't anything immediately below them, so there probably isn't any limit to mounting depth. If for a 4th gen, the spacers are probably for the smaller speaker opening adapter....

Want to bring this back from the dead to avoid making an extra thread on this, but I just want to see if there would be a mounting depth limit for the rears 6x9s on the 5th gen? Thanks.

There doesn't seem to be any depth limit, but you might hit the trunk lid tension bars if the magnets have a large diameter. That's the problem I'm having. The magnets on my 6x9s are pretty wide, so one of them hits the tension bar when I shut the trunk. Not a big deal, but I'm going to replace them with a different set of 6x9s and see what happens.

You might also run into a problem with the stock speaker grills. They will interfere with the rubber/cardboard ring that most 6x9s have. You can try to gingerly take off that ring without lifting off the rubber/foam surround. That's what I did to make mine work. Another option is to cut the plastic off the underside of the grill.
