5th Gen LCD Indash Part 1

Hey guys. I finally got a chance to start putting my carputer for my 5th gen together. After MANY weeks of reading the forums at Mp3car.com I started working on bondoing my 7inch Lilliput in place of where the radio/cd player was.

My system specs for now are:

-Epia Mini-ITX M10000 Mainboard
-512 MB DDR 2600 RAM
-30 Gig Western Digital Harddrive
-7" inch Lilliput touchscreen monitor

More to come:
-GPS
-USB Radio
-5 channel AMP
-Power supply (frustrated waiting for OPUS!)
-USB Sound

As you can see, I still have a little ways to go before everything can be installed into my car. I'm still having fun!

Install Pics:

Cut the trim piece to allow the screen to fit, and added Epoxy glue to hold the screen in place:

Bondo-Hair, Bondo mixed with strands of Fiberglass:

Sanding:

Finishing Bondo:

More Sanding:

Primer:

After hours of wetsanding, using compounds, and buffing:

There are many steps that I skipped because they are just redundant (i.e.- SANDING SANDING SANDING).

Next I plan on building a case for my glove box. Any comments welcome!

that looks hot, the only thing i would have done differently would have been to mold the sides and the top of the screen into the dash piece. The bottom is molded, but the sides and top arnt so it looks a lil weird. But none the less, it looks hot. I have something similar in the works. Its not a carputer, but its an lcd thats custom fitted into the same dash piece. With my system im going to relocate my cd/mp3 player to where the current cup holders are and im going to put a dvd player in the glovebox.

Thanks guys. I was thinking about getting rid of the lines around the screen, but I didn't want it to look too "round". Our stock dash has got a few lines here and there, so I figured it would have looked better with the lines around the LCD. It looks 10 times better in person.

Amazing! It's weird how the bondo and everything makes it look totally ghetto like you destroyed your dash trim, but then the finished product is unbelievable. The most complicated thing I've done is build a false floor for my amp and then put some neons in there.. I got my inspiration from all of you guys with the insane fabrication skills! I can't wait to see the monitor in your car, it's going to be hot! I agree the lines help, if it was totally smooth it would look too custom (yours looks like a factory option).

Just for future reference (and for refrence of anyone appempting a similar install), Bondo and fiberglass are not the ideal prodects to use in a project like this. A lot of people have issues with bondo and fiberglass seperating from ABS plastic over time. The fiberglass and filler expands/contracts with temperatrue at a different rate than the plastic, so people in extreme climates might have more problems. If you spent a good bit of time on surface prep, you might not have any issues at all.

A better alternative would be a semi-rigid plastic filler, such as Duramix 4040 or those sold by 3M (usually used for repairign plastic bumpers). They will adhere to the ABS better, with less chance of shifting over time. . .and are probably a lot easier to sand as well.

I'd say you turned out a pretty nice finshed project. Good job. You may not have any of the probelms I pointed out above, but I'd just keep an eye out for hairline cracks starting to form. SEM sells a spray-can product that reproduces the plastic "grain" you see on most OEM panels, a few coats of that should make your piece look almost totally factory!

I used a few coats of flat black Rustoleum Professional Paint. Then I sanded the imperfections out with a 600 grit wetsand, 1000 grit wetsand, 1500 grit wetsand, and 2000 grit wetsand. Finally I used 3M Swirl and Scratch remover (which is a fine rubbing compound) to finish everything off and get rid of any swirls. Good Luck.

Yeah I got my Lilliput touchscreen is from ebay. It's around $300 shipped from Hong Kong.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...05738&tc=photo

Electronicar is a VERY good seller of these screens, with quick shipment. Highly recommended.

The Lilliput screens are one of the brightest, but sometimes quality can be an issue. Numerous people have had troubles with Lilliput screens, I got really luck and got a perfect one. With Electronicar you have a 1 year warranty, but shipping it to Hong Kong and back can get frustrating and expensive. Good Luck

Is the bondo what's actually holding the piece in place, or did you add support behind it other than the tape?

The tape was only used to keep the screen in place until the epoxy glue dried. Once the glue was dry, the tape was removed and the Bondo-Hair was applied.
